Hueina Su, The Nurturer’s Coach™, Shared Keys to Healthy Living with Cancer Survivors and Caregivers at American Cancer Society

DENVILLE, NJ -- December 18, 2008 -- Hueina Su, The Nurturer’s Coach™, shared her healthy living tips with more than 200 cancer survivors and caregivers at the American Cancer Society Asian Initiatives meeting on December 13, 2008. Su was invited as a panelist along with top oncology doctors and cancer researchers. The topic of the panel discussion was “Keys to Healthy Living.” Su is a professional keynote speaker, certified life coach, founder of Beyond Horizon Coaching of Denville, New Jersey, and the author of Intensive Care for the Nurturer's Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others (January 2009 release).

In her presentation, Su emphasized the importance of stress management and Intensive Self-Care™ for medical professionals and caregivers. These individuals tend to focus on taking care of their patients and family, and often neglect to take good care of themselves. As a result, they experience Self-Care Deficiency Syndrome and burnout. Su encourages everyone to practice Intensive Self-Care™, and “put on your own oxygen mask first” before helping patients and family.

Learning how to manage your stress, restore your inner peace and create work life balance is a critical key to healthy living. According to a new World Cancer Report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), cancer is projected to surpass heart disease as the world’s leading cause of death by 2010. The global cancer burden continues to increase and is set to double by 2020 and could nearly triple by 2030. You can reduce your risk of cancer by adopting a healthy lifestyle and keeping your stress in check.

Su shared with the group about her strategies in addressing the root cause of stress, instead of just fixing the symptoms. The sources of stress could be external circumstances (job, relationship, traffic, illness), as well as internal, self-imposed expectations, limiting beliefs, negative self-talk, etc. Su advised the audience, “Learn to say no, and learn to let go, so that you can say yes to joy.”

In her new book, Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others, Su offers her personal journey as a Nurturer, her years of experience of coaching, and practical strategies to help readers nurture themselves, manage stress, create work-life balance, and restore the missing peace in their stressful lives. Best-selling author Terri Levine, Ph.D., MCC, calls it “A must read for anyone who is in the role of caregiver.”

New Jersey House Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen was the guest of honor at the meeting. He acknowledged the tireless efforts and great work by volunteers. “Asian Initiatives organization is one of the largest communities to support cancer research, patients, survivors and caregivers,” Frelinghuysen said, “Hopefully someday we’ll conquer cancer.”
