12 New Year's Resolutions for the Desperate Caregiver
by Cheryl A. Kuba, MA, Aging Parent Solutions

New Year’s resolutions. We all make them. They are our recipe for a fresh start toward hope, health and happiness for the next twelve months. But, for the majority of family caregivers of aging parents, who are at their wits end in the demanding role of caregiving, the New Year looks anything but ‘happy.’

In the last few months, so many of the caregivers and clients whom I have worked with at Aging Parent Solutions, have expressed how desperate they are for a break in the 24/7-caregiver role. Some told me they don’t know how they can go on. Others said that as they solve one problem for their elderly parent, a new one surfaces. Each caregiver longs for a little down time, and a simple formula that will make their caregiving jobs less stressful. Most wish for relief in three areas for 2007; for their loved one to be released from pain; more time for themselves; and a balance in the workload.

To make this journey a success, and to keep harmony in the family, there has to be a solid plan going into the New Year. The master plan will work even better if the caregiver and care receiver discuss the potential outcomes.

1. Take control of your situation. Don't become a victim of caregiver stress. Set yourself up to be able to provide eldercare without despair.

2. Take care of yourself. Keep current with your own doctors and dental appointments. Eat right and exercise; don't overindulge- in anything! Make it a priority to get enough sleep. This is the time when you need to be at the top of your game.

A study conducted by the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP found that the stress and strain of caregiving could negatively affect your health, well-being, and ability to provide care. Stress is linked to the six leading causes of death— heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide. Throughout your journey, you will hear the safety message told to every airline passenger: “Put on you own oxygen mask first, before you assist an elderly person or a child.” Be aware of the first signs of stress. Don’t wait until someone tells you to put on your oxygen mask!

3. Delegate. Make a list of all the little errands that fall under your ‘multi-tasking’ umbrella. Now, pick four of those tasks, and give them away. Don’t labor over them.

4. Ask for help. You can’t go down this road alone. Write down the names of six people who have offered to help in the past. Take them up on their offers. They meant it. They want to help.

5. Don’t argue. If you find yourself constantly battling with the person you care for, step back. Take a break. Arguing depletes your energy. You will create more harmony if you approach each situation with your saber at your side, instead of with your saber drawn.

6. Give them a break. Remember, that your ailing parent is stuck in a body that is not cooperating. Their physical incapacity is usually the source of their aggravation.

7. Don’t knock the reruns of life. If your parent dwells on the past, and repeats the same story over, and over again, use it to your advantage. If they can’t seem to accept the talent of today’s star NFL quarterback, for example, ask them about football’s most valuable player of 1956. I bet you’ll hear a brand new story that your dad is more than willing to share.

8. Have a plan for when you lose your job. That’s right. Losing your caretaker job is a given. Although it seems like this caregiving role will never end, it will. Your parent will most likely not come back to independence. Chances are they will die on your watch. Be prepared. Suddenly, and without warning, you will have lots of time on your hands. Have a plan. Make a list of things you would like to accomplish when your job is over– hobbies, redecorating, a vacation, volunteering.

9. Savor the silliness. When you are a frazzled, family caregiver, it is hard to believe that there is any silliness in your day. These little nuggets of joy explode when you least expect them. When a crazy situation presents itself where you laugh until you cry, whoop it up. Usually these turn into bonding moments with your parent. Take advantage of the moment. You will never know when you’ll get another chance.

10. Know how to manage your own financial situation. Whether you are supplementing your parent’s care, or you are financially independent- pay attention to the money. Don’t let the stress of caregiving undermine your ability to pay bills on time. If you start to mismanage your finances, ask for help. Talk with someone you trust. Get help before you venture down the road of financial ruin.

11. Find your spiritual connection. Everyone has one. For some people, your source of spiritual connectedness is more difficult to unearth. Whether you pray, meditate, say a mantra, or believe in a God – keep up your belief. This job is larger than all of us. You need an outlet to exercise your faith, and a higher power in which to cast your soul.

12. Remember your parents for who they really are. Don’t file your parent’s personality under “Frail Elder who needs Constant Attention.” In the past months you have been dealing with a mom or a dad who has been in pain, and serious physical decline. Or, perhaps you have had to deal with hospitals and long term care issues that were beyond your comprehension. As these chapters of life come to a close, remember your dad as the vibrant, fun-loving man who could take on the world. Mentally rehearse the memories of your parent’s best years. We know you didn’t voluntarily come into this role, but neither did your dependent family member. No one is dependent by choice.

Take care of yourself, celebrate each moment, and 2007 will be a Happy New Year!

Mastermind Lessons from the Chinese Zodiac
© copyright 2007 Hueina Su, Beyond Horizon Coaching

In honoring the Chinese New Year, I always go to my children's schools to give presentations, which include story-telling, crafts, videos about New Year traditions, and at the end the children get to do a little lion dance with a small lion head I have. It's a lot of fun for the kids and teachers.

One of the most popular stories I tell is the legend of Chinese Zodiac. This year, as I was telling the story, I thought of the valuable lessons we can learn and apply to mastermind groups.

The legend has it that Buddha was not feeling well one day, and the fairies were trying to cheer him up by inviting animals from all over the country to come to a party for Buddha. Thirteen animals were invited, including the cat and the rat, who lived on a farm together and were best friends back then. The cat wanted to take a nap, and asked the rat to wake him up when everyone was ready to leave. However, the rat did not wake up the cat, and the animals left without the cat. It was unknown whether the rat forgot, or purposefully did not wake up the cat.

So, all 12 animals got on their journey to see Buddha. When they were near the Buddha's house, they came upon a river. Now, the rat couldn't swim, so he begged the ox to carry him across the river. The ox was strong and kind, and he gave the rat a ride. They both got over the river safely, and the rat quickly jumped off the ox and was the first animal to reach the Buddha's house. The ox came in second. Buddha decided to name the 12 animals as the Chinese Zodiac to represent each year.

It was said that cat and rat became great enemies since then, because the rat cost the cat the opportunity to be one of the 12 animals of the Zodiac.

Now, what does this legend have to do with mastermind groups?

I think it's extremely important to pick and choose who you invite in your mastermind group. It could make all the difference in how successful your mastermind group is, and how successful each of your members in achieving his/her own goals.

Obviously, you would want to include more "ox" people in your group, i.e. those who will give you a lift and carry you through challenges, so that both of you will arrive at the finish line and achieve your goals.

Beware of the "rat" people who appear to be your friends, but would abandon you or sabotage you when the going gets tough, or because they are only concerned about their own success.

You might consider some of these characteristics when selecting your mastermind group members:

People who are "givers" rather than "takers"
People who will get along and collaborate well with others
People who are open minded
People who respect differences and other viewpoints
People who are committed
People who communicate well
People who are creative, innovative thinkers
People who share and/or support your vision and core values

The biggest asset of mastermind groups is the people. By being selective about who you include in your mastermind group, you can greatly enhance your masterminding experience and success.

7 Tips to Attracting What You Want
by Jack Canfield

We all aspire to be, do and have great things. Yet most of us simply aren’t creating the results we want. We don’t have enough money, romance, success or joy in our lives. But what we need to understand is that greatness exists in all of us. It is simply up to us to pull it out of ourselves. We all have the ability to create the life we want. We just need to learn how to do it. Here are 7 of my top tips to jump-start your success and start "attracting" what you want into your life.

1. Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life

One of the greatest myths that is pervasive in our culture today is that you are entitled to a great life-that, and that somehow, somewhere, someone is responsible for filling our lives with continual happiness, exciting career options, nurturing family time and blissful personal relationships simply because we exist. But the real truth is that there is only one person responsible for the quality of the life you live. That person is YOU.

2. Be Clear Why You’re Here

I believe each of us is born with a life purpose. Identifying, acknowledging and honoring this purpose is perhaps the most important action successful people take. They take the time to understand what they’re here to do-and then they pursue that with passion and enthusiasm.

3. Decide What You Want

One of the main reasons why most people don’t get what they want is they haven’t decided what they want. They haven’t defined their desires in clear and compelling detail... What does success look like to you? Not everybody's definition of success is the same, nor should it be.

4. Believe It’s Possible

Scientists used to believe that humans responded to information flowing into the brain from the outside world. But today, they’re learning instead that we respond to what the brain, based on previous experience, expects to happen next... In fact, the mind is such a powerful instrument, it can deliver to you literally everything you want. But you have to believe that what you want is possible.

5. Believe in Yourself

If you are going to be successful in creating the life of your dreams, you have to believe that you are capable of making it happen. Whether you call it self-esteem, self-confidence or self-assurance, it is a deep-seated belief that you have what it takes-the abilities, inner resources, talents and skills to create your desired results.

6. Become an Inverse Paranoid

Imagine how much easier it would be to succeed in life if you were constantly expecting the world to support you and bring you opportunity. Successful people do just that.

7. Unleash the Power of Goal Setting

Experts on the science of success know the brain is a goal-seeking organism. Whatever goal you give to your subconscious mind, it will work day and night to achieve...To engage you subconscious mind, a goal has to be measurable. When there is no criteria for measurement, it is simply something you want, a wish, a preference, or a good idea.

1. Welcome & Announcements

Happy Valentine's Day!

Most people only think about Valentine's Day, when they think about the month of February. Actually, February is very important for at least one other reason: American Heart Health Month. Do you know that 1 in 3 women get cardiovascular diseases, and that cardiovascular diseases is the No. 1 killer of American women (more than all cancers combined)? The American Heart Association has their Go Red for Women Campaign to raise awareness for women's heart health. So, go and read about it, and join the movement to protect your health and your loved one's too!

While you are busy planning a special evening with your special someone, I would like to remind you to celebrate YOU -- the most important (but often neglected) person in YOUR life.

Whenever I asked the question "Who is the most important person in your life?" My clients and workshop participants always answered "my husband/wife, my kids, my parents", etc.

NOT ONCE has someone answered "Me" or "Myself".

NOT ONCE.

I often joked that "If your answer is anyone but yourself, then you need to come see me ASAP!!!"

Think about it: What would your life be without YOU?

What would your loved ones' life be, without a healthy, happy and vibrant YOU?

This Valentine's Day, make a point to celebrate YOU, honor yourself, and give yourself the LOVE and TLC you truly deserve. (read the featured article)

** Valentine's Day Special **
From now until the end of February, I am offering a special discount for 1-hour private telephone coaching session. The regular price is $150, but if you book your appointment by February 28, 2007, you pay only $50.

You can use this 1-hour session to work on one particular issue, make a difficult decision, or brainstorm for your action plan of a specific goal (remember those New Year's Resolutions you set last month???) Send me an email at Hueina@BeyondHorizonCoaching.com to reserve your appointment today!

Seeking the Minimum Level
by Andrea J. Lee
(this is a reprint from her new book "Money, Meaning and Beyond")

Would you use a power tool to put in a tack? Time and energy are your precious resources. Use them wisely by seeking the minimal level.

The idea of seeking the minimum level in business owes origins to the work of the Frugal Zealot* who wrote about 'the minimum level' from the perspective of thrift as an alternative lifestyle in 1992.

'People are creatures of habit.'**

When it comes to business owners, there's never been a truer statement. It's probably for that reason that the unexpected ways we approach business in this book are so well received.

After hearing the same lessons about business for so long, we can tend to accept them without questioning. After doing things for the same way for so long, it can take a little shock treatment for us to stop.

But it's important that we do, because far too many business owners are chronically tired and overworked, yet are still trying harder to do more with their energy and time.

Old ways of thinking and old habits can be very costly - to both the success of your business, and your overall happiness.

Case Study:

Andrea: I was working with a client in the summer of 2002. I remember it clear as day. She was a really earnest, really serious-about-getting-to-success type of client. And she was talking about doing some door-to-door canvassing of the business owners in her building to see if there was interest in doing a building-wide flyer.

(This was part of our work together on collaboration - see Chapter 12: No Great Thing is Accomplished Alone)

Now you need to know that her business was doing alright. She had earned close to six-figures each year for the last year and a half and had an assistant and a nice little office. But whatever reason - you might relate - she was extremely stressed about getting over six figures. It was a prize for her, something symbolic, I think.

When she started talking about going from door-to-door herself, later in the day, and how it would take her several days to get around to all the offices, I interrupted.

"I think that's a waste of your time and energy. You're already tired out as it is. Is this something YOU have to do?"

I don't know why, but some clients just like to argue with their coach, and that's what she did. Finally, I said -

"Why would you use a power tool to put in a tack?"

And she got it.

Do you invest too much energy into tasks that aren't worth it? Are you using a lot of time on a project that could be done with much less?

If you have a tack in front of you, you wouldn't use a power tool to put it in. It would be a massive, disproportionately powerful tool to get the result you want.

This can be a difficult one, but try to develop an awareness of how to apply just the right amount of energy and resources to the appropriate tasks.

If you're used to providing a full-fledged proposal for a client, would a two-page summary work just as well? Do you send over five possible ideas for how to 'redo the living room' when 3 would be equally delightful to your client? How about paperwork - are you overdoing your paperwork and losing time and resources?

When you write emails, do you always proofread and double-check before you send out? If you're doing a series of follow-up calls that are administrative in nature, could an assistant could do the trick? Do you always stay open an extra three hours on Thursday night when only a few customers ever come in? See if closing up shop on Thursday nights will work. Or, take appointments for people who absolutely can't get to your store during regular hours.

You get the picture. Experiment with the minimum level.

Wisdom nugget:

Based on experience, we estimate business owners waste an average of 20-30% on tasks that would be just as good, just as complete, if they'd leave well enough alone.

The Frugal Zealot puts it really well:

"When you wash dishes, do you always fill the sink to the top? If you're doing a small number of dishes a sink half full of water may suffice just as well. Do you always put a two-second squirt of dishwashing liquid in the water? See if a one-second squirt will work. "

"Do you use an inch of toothpaste because a brush has inch-long rows of bristles and every toothpaste advertisement you've ever seen portrays a neat, full, bristle-length swath? Experiment to see if a ½ inch of toothpaste works as well."

Seeking the minimum level definitely goes against the grain at first, because business owners are used to working hard, and racing to keep up.

Take a moment now to think of just one thing that you could work a lot less hard at to complete, or better yet, one thing you can take off your 'To Do' list entirely.

This article is chapter 18 out of 30 in the book 'Money, Meaning and Beyond.' More details available at www.MoneyMeaningandBeyond.com

Endnotes:

* The Frugal Zealot is pen name for author Amy Dzcyczyn, founder of "The Tightwad Gazette."

** Amy's article on 'Seeking the Minimum Level' in volume I of her book 'The Tightwad Gazette: Promoting Thrift as a Viable Alternative Lifestyle" was the inspiration for this chapter which takes the idea of the minimum level and applies it to the business world.

Celebrating YOU: The Leading Lady of Your Show
© Copyright 2007 Hueina Su, Beyond Horizon Coaching

Most people think about Valentine's Day, when they think about the month of February. It's important to celebrate your loved ones, and love in general. However, while you are busy planning a special evening with your special someone, I would like to remind you to celebrate YOU -- the most important (but often neglected) person in YOUR life.

Whenever I asked the question "Who is the most important person in your life?" My clients and workshop participants always answered "my husband/wife, my kids, my parents", etc.

NOT ONCE has someone answered "Me" or "Myself".

NOT ONCE.

I often joked that "If your answer is anyone but yourself, then you need to come see me ASAP!"

Think about it: What would your life be without YOU?

What would your loved ones' life be, without a healthy, happy and vibrant YOU?

When my clients said to me "But the show must go on", I asked "Whose show are you talking about?" I told them, "You may not realize this, but YOU are the Leading Lady of your show, the show that's Your Life".

Every single one of us is the Leading Lady (or Man) of our own life.

Now, let me make myself clear. This is NOT about being ego-maniac or narcissistic. It's about self love, the greatest love of all. (Remember that Whitney Houston song? Now that I mentioned it, I bet you can't get that song out of your head now, can ya?)

"But, ...."

I know, there's a big BUT coming up right at this moment....

You probably have convincing reasons why you are not the most important person in your life, and why you cannot afford to put your self-care as top priority.

As a professional life coach, consultant and mother of two, over the years I've heard many, many legitimate reasons as well as excuses (and the limiting beliefs behind them), from my clients, my friends, and my family. I have experienced many similar challenges myself, in my previous roles as a nurse, counselor, full-time stay-at-home mom, full-time working mom, small business owner, etc. Believe me, I know. It's not easy.

It's especially hard when you have some limiting beliefs around the issue of self love, self esteem and self-care. You know the limiting beliefs I'm talking about -- "I can't afford it", "I'm not worthy enough", "I don't deserve it", "I must take care of everyone else first (or else)", "If I say no, people won't love/like me any more", etc. etc. etc.

Does it ring a bell?

These limiting beliefs took years to form, and it will take some time and some hard work to overcome them. But, it's not impossible. When you can break free from these limiting beliefs, you will finally be free to be your authentic self, and free to create the life you truly desire. If you need some coaching around these issues, I'd be happy to help you.

Even when you are still chained to your limiting beliefs, you can still make a conscious choice, right now, to love and accept yourself, and to treat yourself with respect and some much needed TLC.

Remember, you are the Leading Lady and director of your own show. You are in charge and fully responsible for how your show turns out to be. If your show is competing for the Academy of Life Award, which categories will it be nominated? Which awards will you win?

This Valentine's Day, make a point to celebrate YOU, honor yourself, and give yourself the LOVE and star treatment you truly deserve.

Andy Rooney on Women Over 40
For all of us women over 40 or those of you looking forward to your 40's this is really good! If you missed it on 60 Minutes, this is what Andy Rooney thinks about women over 40. Andy Rooney is one smart gent, and I think this piece is very fitting for Valentine's Day. Enjoy!

***********************
by Andy Rooney, 60 Minutes Correspondent

As I grow in age, I value women over 40 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why:

A woman over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, "What are you thinking?" She doesn't care what you think.

If a woman over 40 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do, and it's usually more interesting.

Women over 40 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated.

Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 40.

Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 40 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over 40 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed, hot woman over 40, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress.

Ladies, I apologize. For all those men who say, "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?", here's an update for you.

Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage.

Why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage!

Carnival of Healing #72: Nourish Your Body, Heal Your Soul
Welcome to Carnival of Healing #72: Nourish Your Body, Heal Your Soul.

Carnival of Healing is a weekly round-up of personal Web sites and blogs on the topics of holistic health, wellness, spirituality, and self empowerment. While you are nurturing others, don't forget to nourish your body and heal your soul. Let's dive in and look at the first post of this week's carnival.

Aaron Potts at Today is That Day shares a powerful Hawaiian healing practice Ho'oponopono in How to Help Yourself and Everyone Else at the Same Time. He wrote, "In a nutshell, Ho’oponopono and similar beliefs state that our surroundings are powered by our own inner beliefs and perceptions of the way that we think things are, or should be." Aaron highly recommends Dr. Joe Vitale's work about this practice and his upcoming book Zero Limits. Coincidentally, I also recently posted an article by Dr. Vitale about how Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len uses Ho 'oponopono to heal his patients.

Joanne Hay at The Nourisher presents The Mind, Grace and Anandagiriji, recounting her experience of meeting Anandagiriji, a director of the Oneness University of India. Among the many gems in this post: "Bhagavan speaks of the impossibility of the human mind freeing us of our limitations. The mind is obsessed with being right or significant. While the human brain remains stuck with its switch on survival of the self, we remain slaves to the mind. It is impossible to free ourselves and be who we truly are. He says Grace is the only way this can happen. By surrendering to Grace, we become en-lightened. It is not possible any other way. Effort and striving is a product of the mind and the mind can not free us of the mind."

Patricia at A Better You Blog teaches us how to SWOT Your Life to Success. Patricia wrote, "SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. The SWOT analysis started at Stanford University by Albert Humphrey, and is a strategic planning tool for corporations to evaluate and create a plan of action for success. It is effective in determining what stands in the way of achieving your goals." Patricia used SWOT to examine her own life in this article. Read it and see how you can apply this tool in your own life.

Jonathan at The Loan Clutter introduces the inspiring story of Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell in Best of People/Health/Fitness. Asafa Powell broke the world 100-meter record at the 2005 Super Grand Prix in Athens, Greece, and became the fastest man in the world. The name “Asafa” means “rising to the occasion”. How appropriate for a champion like him!

Dr. Aleksandr Kavokin presents Your Diet as Medicine. Interview with Dr. La Puma at RDoctor.com. John La Puma, M.D., F.A.C.P. is the Medical Director, Santa Barbara Institute for Medical Nutrition and Healthy Weight, co-author of the NY Times bestseller "RealAge Diet" and the Amazon #1 cookbook "Cooking the RealAge Way.", and he also hosts "What's Cooking with ChefMD?" on Lifetime TV. He talks about choosing the right foods to control obesity, diabetes, aging, and promote overall health. Dr. La Puma said,"I prescribe medications and think they will always be important, especially for acute conditions. But for chronic symptoms and conditions I think what, how, when and how much you eat, and where it is from and how it is prepared has a greater impact than is now recognized."

Craig Harper at Renovate Your Life with Craig presents The Incredible Relationship between our Mind and our Body. Craig shares his own experience of "white coat hypertension", as well as what he learned from Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Andrew Weil. I'd like to highlight this point in particular: "Deepak also told us about a chemical that our body produces when we're having lots of fun. It's called interleukin 2. He then told us that interleukin 2 was being produced synthetically to treat some cancers. Can you believe that.. when we're happy our body produces a chemical used to fight cancer! Get happy I say". Well, I second that emotion.

SierraNightTide at The Healing Days advises us an all-important but often-neglected issue of setting up Advance Directives (Living Will and Designation of Health Care Surrogate), and making your wishes known. It is especially critical if you have children. Don't think "this will never happen to me". Read her post Anther Night At The Hospital and take actions to set up your own Advance Directives, if you have not done so.

Maria Yu at art-life-spirit.com presents Self-Expression and Human Existence. She shares a revelation from her former vocal teacher: "Self-expression is the drive that is hard-wired, contained within the DNA.” He continued, “Every other drive we may have is subordinate to the desire/passion for total, complete, full expression of oneself. That is, there is only one drive ruling humanity: the drive/passion for total, complete, full self-expression." She concluded that, "I think that’s what “life purpose” is all about. When we manifest our inner expression we feel fulfilled and we bloom. It is like our life is full of meaning and we don’t feel lost or empty anymore."

Chris Johnson at Wise Bread alerts us of a potential Cheap Cure for Cancer announced by the researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. According to the lead researcher Evangelos Michelakis, the drug, dichloroacetate (DCA), has already been used for years to treat rare metabolic disorders and so is known to be relatively safe. They have not started clinical trials yet, but you can find the links in this post to keep an eye on future development of this treatment option.

Vahid Chaychi at Cancer and Health Topics quotes several studies to assert that Braces Improve Self Esteem and Self-Confidence - Not True! Contrary to popular beliefs that straightening children's teeth could improve their self-esteem and self-confidence, some studies found no significant impact. It's something to think about before splurging for orthodontist treatments.

Leonard Alexander at All About aBILITIES raises some interesting and valid points in Does God Still Do Miracles?

Aparna at Beauty & Personality Grooming presents Home Remedies for Acidity. She wrote, "Burning sensation in the chest, lack of appetite, sour oral secretion/belching, vomiting, headache, frequent indigestion etc. are some of the symptoms (of acidity)". Aparna shares 14 home remedies for acidity and things to avoid to prevent future episodes.

Neelima at Healthy B.P.M. presents Anti-aging Foods. She lists some of her favorite anti-aging foods, including olive oil, honey, ginger, pineapple, and chicken.

On a personal note, my Chinese medicine doctor/acupuncturist James Kan, M.D. got me drinking fresh ginger tea every day (put 7 thin slices of fresh ginger root in 1-cup boiling water for 1 minute, don't cook longer than that, you can add brown sugar or honey to taste). Fresh ginger root promotes lung health and expels cold from your body. According to him, if you cook the ginger root for more than 1 minute, the ginger root loses the healing quality for your lungs (even though it would still expel cold). I haven't had an asthma attack or serious sinus infection for almost two months now, and I believe acupuncture and ginger did the trick for me. :)

The last post is from me, Heart of Caregiving, introducing a website set up by American Heart Association for caregivers, posted here at Intensive Care for the Nurturer's Soul.

This concludes this issue of Carnival of Healing. Thank you, everyone, for participating! Looking back, the Carnival of Healing #71 was at Wisdom of Healing. Looking forward, next week, the carnival will be up at Optimist Lab.

      I was talking to nobody
by Mike Litman (author of 'Conversations with Millionaires')

If you ever get down, depressed and feel like quitting on your dreams, re-read this email.

      Here's the deal.

I was practically talking to nobody.

"Mike, cut it out, what are you talking about?"

Let me tell you a story.

It was 1997, I was 24 years old and I was a dreamer who couldn't hold a job.

I told my parents accountant that I 'knew' marketing and I started helping him a few hours a month with his business.

He asked me a question that turned out to change my life forever.

      This is what he said.

"Mike, would you like to be a guest on my radio show?"

I hesitated, leaning toward saying "No." and decided to say "Yes!" (Make a note of this: Greatness starts by saying YES to an opportunity.)

So I appeared on his local radio show. (I even have the interview on tape still and maybe will make it available to be heard someday.)

So I was on his show for 60 minutes and I LOVED IT.

I never once thought about being on radio before, but I soenjoyed it that I asked the station manager for my own show.

She said, "Sure, pay for the time. $75 for each half hour."(This was 1997)

Follow me here because the point I'm about to share withyou can and -WILL- change your life.

So I started my own show, 'Business Breakthroughs with MikeLitman' (1240AM WGBB) and I interviewed my 'idols'.

      I was 24 years old.

My 'idols' were big name CEO's, selfhelp authors and motivational speakers, but here was my little secret.

I didn't have anyone listening to the show.

      I had noaudience.

I had my Mom, Dad and 1 other listener.

*** I was practically talking to nobody.

Funny, right? To this day I can think about it and laugh.

Here's the point. It's powerful if you're OPEN to RECEIVE it.

*** You're ALWAYS insignificant before you are significant.

To reach your goals, you always have to go through a TEST period which includes moments and possibly periods of insignificance.

Nature makes you EARN the right to be rich.

      Here's where PERSISTENCE comes in.

Here's where - You don't have to get it right, you just have to get it going - comes in.

Those radios shows where I was practically talking to no audience, 4 years later were turned into my now #1 best-selling book 'Conversations with Millionaires'.

      Who could have predicted that?

      Not I. Not me.

Now hundreds of thousands of individuals have read my 'Conversations with Millionaires' and those interviews will be read for decades and decades.

      I don't teach you things I haven't done myself.

I've been through periods of insignificance.

      I got it going.

I fail more in a month than most people fail in a year.

      Big deal.

My business has helped hundreds of thousands of people and generated millions of dollars in revenue.

      The game is called SERVICE.

The game is called creating VALUE.

      One more tip for today.

STAY in the game long enough to WIN.

      Heart of Caregiving

American Heart Association has a special website Heart of Caregiving dedicated to caregivers, including caregiver rights, responsibility, reality-check, and resources. Check it out!

As I always stress to my clients, as a "nurturer" or caregiver, you need to practice Intensive Self-Care to ensure your own physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, so you will have more to give and avoid Nurturing Burnout. I've also emphasized the importance of having a support structure, and not being a loner.

The Heart of Caregiving also emphasizes the importance of refresh (carve out time and space for yourself), replenish (eat nutritious foods to beat stress), rejuvenate (physical activities and exercise improve both physical and emotional health), and reach out (good communication with family, friends, healthcare professionals, your employer, other caregivers can provide better support for you as a caregiver).

Check out Heart of Caregiving today, and email this post to anyone you know who is a caregiver.

Also refer to my previous post about Go Red for Women movement, dedicated to support women's heart health.

My post "Build Your Success Team" is included in the Carnival of Healing #71 this week at Wisdom of Healing:

"Hueina is another of the great bloggers out there supporting the greater good. She makes a convincing case for setting up what I’ve always referred to as our ‘positive support system’ in: Build Your Success Team posted at Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul. We don’t fare well going it alone and too many of us have our ‘negative support team’ ready to hold us back. "

Go Red for Women's Heart Health

Do you know that 1 in 3 women get cardiovascular diseases, and that cardiovascular diseases is the No. 1 killer of American women (more than all cancers combined)?

Today is the day to Go Red for women's heart health. If you didn't wear red today, don't worry-- you've got all month to wear red and support heart health.

In 1963, Congress required the president to proclaim February "American Heart Month". American Heart Association has their Go Red for Women Campaign to raise awareness for women's heart health. Go to this page to read about this campaign, and take the Go Red Heart CheckUp.

Here are some facts to consider:

Fact: 1 in 3 women get heart disease.

Fact: Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of women over 25.

Fact: Cardiovascular disease kills nearly twice as many women over 25 than all cancers combined.

Fact: Young women who have heart attacks are twice as likely to die from them as men are.

Fact: Women's heart attack symptoms are very different from the typical men's heart attack symptoms. Besides chest pain, women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

Women's Health Magazine created a cute, fun-to-read 8 Healthy Steps to a Healthy Heart

Join Go Red for Women movement, and receive a free red dress pin you can proudly wear to show that you're part of the Go Red for Women movement. Email this post to all of your friends and family to raise awareness and support American Heart Month.

CPR for Balance Tips: Clean up your e-mail Inbox

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by your (literally) overflowing e-mail Inbox? Chances are, in addtion to work-related e-mails, and e-mails from your friends and family, you have signed up for several newsgroups, blog feeds, newsletters, and other mailing lists. They all provide valuable information for your personal or professional life. However, if you're not managing your Inbox effectively, you could end up with information overload and lots of stress (and who needs MORE stress?!!!)

Several clients of mine are experiencing "Inbox Anxiety" -- they are so overwhelmed by their over-stuffed e-mail Inbox that they started to avoid opening the Inbox to read any emails. Can you imagine what'd happen when you stop reading and deleting e-mails for a few WEEKS??? Yikes! I can tell you, it's NOT a pretty sight.

Jason Womack, a keynote speaker and executive coach, offers this simple tip to de-clutter and clean up your e-mail Inbox. He wrote:

"As you become faster, and better, it's more important than ever to clear the clutter. In too many cases, the e-mail inbox is a storage bin of items old and new, urgent and nice, pressing and overdue.

Multi-minding (forget multi-tasking; have you ever listened to a voice mail and read an e-mail at the same time? Can't be done at 100%…) only serves to distribute your focus. Instead, you want to engage and perform every time you open the inbox.

      Here's how:

Change the incoming subject lines of your e-mails. (Easy to do in e-mail programs like Outlook and Lotus Notes.) As you review new items, identify your next action. Naturally, you don't want to repeatedly (ie: every time you scan your in-box) see an e-mail with a subject line that reads:

Re: re: re: FWD: budget meeting

Instead, review the message the first time you see it and change the subject line to something more actionable, such as:

draft initial presentation overview re: budget for Q3

This way, when you do open the inbox, you'll know what items you can / cannot do by simply reviewing the subject lines, instead of re-reading, and closing the same messages over and over again.

When e-mail users use this process of 'appropriately identifying the action' each e-mail represents, they usually wind up purging, sorting and organizing much of their inbox into other folders. This cleans the clutter, and makes it easier to perform at higher level of productivity and lower level of stress."
