Intensive Care for the Nurturer's Soul
Happy Monday! I'd like to share some exciting news about my recent media appearances.
1. As you know, I was the keynote speaker for Food and Drug Administration's Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebration in May. You can now watch a 10-min video of my keynote on YouTube:
2. On June 18, I was featured in Daily Record, New Jersey's largest newspaper. The article is called "A Prescription for Balance". It's available online at DailyRecord.com. However, you can also read & download this article on my website, in the Media Room. While you are there, you can also watch the video of my previous TV interview "C.P.R. for Balance" on Ebru TV.
3. In addition, I was interviewed on a Cablevision show "For the Health of It". During this 30-minute interview, the host Dr. Dave Barrett and I discussed the effects of stress, how most stress relief strategies only provide temporary relief (but not treating the root cause of stress), and how I use coaching as well as other multisensory stress relief techniques to help my clients get long-lasting relief from stress. If you live in Morris County, NJ, you can watch this show live on Cablevision's public access channel (channel 21). I was told that the show will air this Wednesday at 6:00pm, for 4 consecutive weeks. Please check your local TV listing for the correct show time.
If you can't access this channel, don't worry (I can't either). I'll receive a copy of the tape, and I'm planning to put it on my website. I will keep you posted on this.
That's it for now. Stay cool & calm and enjoy this beautiful summer day!
Ah, summer has officially begun. When I think of summer, I think of long, sunny days spent by the pool, carefree, breezy sandy beach days, colorful sandals and umbrella drinks, and having fun with my children, friends and family, living completely in the moment.... not a care in the world. I hope you’re enjoying your summer so far.

When it comes to achieving success, whether personal or professional, commitment is one of the top must-have factors. In order to have a successful mastermind group that truly supports each member's vision and goals, I'm sure you'd agree that having each member's full commitment to the mastermind group and to the group process is critical.
It sounds simple and totally logical, right? Why wouldn't you be committed to your own mastermind group? In reality, however, I've found that not everyone is on the same page about this one.
For example, one of the mastermind groups I belong to recently had a heated discussion on the issue of commitment, and we almost decided to break up the group as a result.
We've had this group for about two years and it was going strong. All of the members are entrepreneurs & service professionals, and we meet once a month in person. We are committed to honing our professional skills, always have a lot of great ideas and cheer each other on as we all make progress in our businesses. It was going very well, until recently.
Some of the members started to miss quite a few meetings, due to other activities and commitments. Others started to question whether they are committed to our mastermind group and see it as a priority. Overall, we were unhappy that some members kept missing our meetings, and it's a sign of lack of commitment and respect. Of course, sometimes people have to miss a meeting because of emergencies, or important business commitments that they cannot re-arrange. That's totally understandable. But when you knew the meeting time ahead of time, and repeatedly choose to attend other activities instead, that does raise the question about commitment. It finally got to the point where we had to sit down and put this on agenda, so we could all voice our opinions. We were seriously considering "un-inviting" some members, or breaking up the group into two groups in order to accommodate everyone's schedule better, and/or opening up our closed group to new members. On the other hand, we do love our mastermind group and everyone in it, and everyone prefers to keep our group intact, if at all possible.
So, after some lengthy discussions and flushing out a lot of emotions and ideas, we finally decided to keep the group together as is. We are in this together, and we are willing to work at it. Everyone asserted their commitment to the group, and we moved on to discuss possible new directions and project ideas for our mastermind group. We've got a new lease of life for our mastermind group, and new level of appreciation, commitment and respect.
If you are starting a mastermind group, it's important to have everyone agree on the level of commitment that's expected. If you're experiencing a similar challenge in your current mastermind group, or any professional group, you might want to address the issue promptly, before it errodes the morale of the entire group and causes bigger problems down the road. Since everyone and every group naturally grow and evole over time, it's also a good idea to review the ground rules from time to time, and see if you need to make any revisions to better suit your group's needs.
Here is a short video clip of my keynote address at the FDA 2008 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebration. My videographer has edited and uploaded it to YouTube.

Dr. Wayne Dyer is one of my all-time favorite authors. I'm excited to find out that he will be appearing on Oprah's Soul Series webcast next Monday. Below is the description of the program:
Want to get in touch with your soul?
Widely regarded as "the father of motivation," Dr. Wayne Dyer shares his insights with Oprah on the ancient Chinese book of wisdom, the Tao Te Ching, and how to apply the wisdom of the Tao to your everyday life. Watch Oprah's Soul Series webcast exclusively on Oprah.com for Wayne Dyer's two-part series:
I recently discovered a remarkable interview of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained brain scientist and author of a fascinating book My Stroke of Insight.
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor was featured as Time magazine's 100 most influential people of 2008. When she was a young girl, she became fascinated with the functions of the human brain, because her brother has schizophrenia. His brain disorder led Jill to dedicate her career to studying severe mental illnesses as a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist.
On December 10, 1996, at age 37, Jill awoke with intense pain behind her left eye — a blood vessel had exploded in the left hemisphere of her brain, and within hours, Jill could no longer walk, talk, read or write. She was suffering from an arteriovenous malformation— a rare type of stroke. While Jill struggled to phone for help, she was aware that the left hemisphere of her brain was shutting down, taking with it her language, organizing and other analytical skills. As her speech and motor functions failed her, she melted into what she called a euphoric stupor and lost all sense of where "Dr. Jill" ended and the rest of the universe began. In her speech on Ted.com, she said that she could "no longer define the boundary of my body because the atoms and molecules of my body blended with the atoms and molecules of the wall, and I could detect was this energy". Without the dominant left side of her brain controlling her thoughts, Jill says her mind chatter went silent, leaving only the right side of the brain functioning. Through the right side of her brain, Jill says her consciousness shifted away from reality and into a place of inner peace and Nirvana. She felt this enormous, expansive energy, and she felt "as one" with the Universe.
In her own words, Jill says, "When the cells in my left brain became nonfunctional because they were swimming in a pool of blood, they lost their ability to inhibit the cells in my right hemisphere. In my right brain, I shifted into the consciousness of the present moment. I was in the right here, right now awareness, with no memories of my past and no perception of the future. The beauty of La-la land (my right hemisphere experience of the present moment) was that everything was an explosion of magnificent stimulation and I dwelled in a space of euphoria."
This is what I've been teaching my coaching clients and workshop attendees: Most people either live in the past (with regrets and/or resentment) or in the future (with fears and/or worries). To have inner peace and balance, you need to make a conscious choice to live in the present moment. When you are completely "in the moment", there is no stress.
It took Jill major brain surgery and years of recovery after her stroke. The experience was life-changing. The remarkable thing is, through this ordeal, she discovered a better quality of life through increased use of the right hemisphere of her brain. She sees her stroke as a gift of unparalleled awareness: the shattering of the self-created box we live in that we call "life." She's now an artist as well as a scientist, creating anatomically correct stained-glass replicas of brains that are sold as fine art. She's also published My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey. The book explains in scientific detail exactly what happened during Jill's stroke and how she recovered. It also takes a closer look at how the right hemisphere of the brain works and how Jill says people with normal brains can access it to find their own inner peace and improve their quality of life and the lives of others.
Oprah recently interviewed Jill on her Soul Series webcast on Oprah.com. You can watch & download this amazing 4 episodes of webcast here.
You can read Jill's interview on Amazon.com here. There is also a video of her speech on the same page.
So, what's your biggest insight from reading Dr. Jill's story? What have you learned that you can apply to your own life? What activities or rituals can help you be completely "in the moment"? What thoughts & beliefs can you choose in order to live in the now and remain at peace?
For me, meditation and yoga help me quiet my mind. Besides that, there are also many other activities that help me achieve the same result. I've found that any activities that require your full attention & focus would force you to be in the moment, thus reduce stress and anxiety. For example, when I'm doing something I love, whether photography, art, fencing or martial arts training, time stands still, and I'm completely in the moment. I am alive, joyful and at peace. Besides, it's really hard to think about your to-do list or dinner menu, when there's a sword or a fist coming at you!!
So, if you don't like to meditate, that's not a problem at all. Just think of something you truly enjoy, and commit to doing that on a regular basis. It would be a great stress relief remedy for you. And when you're stressed out by negative thoughts, beliefs and worries, just pause, take a few deep breaths and count your blessings. Gratitude is THE shortcut to joy. It shifts your energy instantly. Try it, and you will see, Nirvana is really just a thought away.
Hueina Su Was Invited Keynote Speaker at FDA’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration
PRESS RELEASE - For Immediate Release Hueina Su Was Invited Keynote Speaker at FDA’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration
Hueina Su, a certified empowerment coach, wellness consultant, and president of Beyond Horizon Coaching, of Denville, New Jersey, was the invited keynote speaker at the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebration, held on May 21 at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Northeast Regional Laboratory and New York District Office located in Jamaica, New York. The theme for the event was “Liberty, Diversity, Harmony…Gateway to Success.” The event was attended by 100 FDA staff and family members. Su is also an adjunct professor at County College of Morris, where she teaches continuing education courses for nurses.
With a BS in nursing from the National Taiwan University and a MS in family studies behind her, Su’s keynote address, “Prescription for Balance and Harmony,” creatively meshed her experience in nursing with her passion for helping people to recognize the consequences of chronic stress and the importance for maintaining life balance and harmony. She presented her C.P.R. for Balance(TM) model (C = choose consciously, P = prioritize by core values, and R = reframe your perspective), which can help people live in the present moment, maintain balance in their lives, attain inner peace, and create a life of their choice.
Su reflected on the stress she felt on arrival in the USA from Taiwan to pursue graduate studies. Her insecurities and self-consciousness about being a “foreigner” who didn’t speak perfect English, a painfully shy woman, and a minority in this country all added to her stress, which drove her to develop a method to overcome these things and to share her insight on the subject, and eventually led her to a career she loves. “When I focus on serving others,” she explained in her presentation, “knowing my message can really make a difference in many people’s lives, my imperfect English or skin color is no longer my main concern. I was able to transcend from a scared wallflower to a well-respected professional life coach and speaker.” Upon conclusion of her presentation, Su received a Certificate of Recognition signed by the FDA New York district director, Otto Vitillo, and the FDA Northern Regional Laboratory director, Michael Palmieri.
The National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebration included opening remarks by Laurence Daurio, director, Domestic Investigations Branch of the FDA; Filipino line-dance performances by FDA staff members; comments by Lishia Liu, development manager for the Asian American Federation; and introductory and closing remarks by Susan Hadman (the program coordinator).
