Carnival of Family Life 3-31-2008 Edition
Welcome to Carnival of Family Life.

Spring is finally here! I love this season! Everything is growing, including our children, our pets, and our Carnival. Even though I've participated many times in the past, this is my very first time hosting this wonderful carnival. There are SO many great posts this week, so let's get started!

Family Pets

Anyone who has fish as pets would agree with Matt M that fish is not boring. It's very relaxing to watch them, and they do recognize their caretakers. Read what Matt has to say in Fish Not Boring posted at The Pet Haven.

Education

As parents, we are our children's first and lifetime teachers. As the following posts illustrated, when it comes to helping our children learn, whether they go to school or home-school, it's important to figure out their unique learning styles, and leverage their passions & interests. On the other hand, our children see the world through us. So, we also need to teach our children how to see the world not only with their bright eyes, but also with their hearts.

Marjorie presents Interest Led Learning, "All Boy" Style posted at Life Without School.

Melitsa presents Run around to sit still posted at Play-Activities.com.

Linda Bress Silbert, Ph.D. and Alvin J. Silbert, Ed.D. present Tips for helping with math homework posted at Our Educational Books, saying, "Helping parents help kids, reduce stress, enjoy family time together with these homework tips."

James DeLelys presents Prejudice: Look With Your Heart and Not Your Eyes posted at Healing Through Words.

Family Finance

It's important to keep family finance and your personal credit in check. Teaching our children about money, and saving up for expensive college tuition are both great priorities for parents. The following posts offer tips and advice.

Stephanie presents The Library is Your Friend posted at Unclaimed Money.

No Credit Needed presents My Four Year Old Son Receives His First "Credit Card" posted at No Credit Needed.

Matthew Paulson presents Can Bad Credit Cost You a Job? posted at American Consumer News.

Family Health and Wellness

Keeping our children, our aging parents, and ourselves healthy is no small feat. The daily caretaking responsibilities can really stress you out, which in turn will have a negative impact on your entire family. As I always teach my coaching clients, it's essential for your survival and well-being, and for your loved ones, to practice Intensive Self-Care. Here are some sound advice from our fellow bloggers on keeping yourself and your family healthy and well.

Family Relationships and Self-Improvement

Ah, the relationship with your parents (and other family members too) could be very endearing and challenging sometimes, as the following posts illustrated. We all want our parents to be proud of us. Wanting to be loved and accepted as who we are, is one of the most important human needs. Sometimes, though, you've got to go after your dreams and passions, despite what your parents or other people say. It's your life, and you have to create your own path. A New Beginning
"The past is but the beginning of a beginning,
and all that is and has been
is but the twilight of the dawn."

-- H. G. Wells, 1866-1946, English Author, Historian and Journalist

Happy Spring! March is the Women's History Month. Looking at the history and the upcoming presidential election, needless to say, we've come a long way!

At the dinner table tonight, I happily announced that tomorrow is my birthday, and I'm going to spend some quality time with myself at the spa. It's become a tradition of mine in the past few years, to spend half a day at a spa to pamper myself, and spend some quiet, alone time, on or around my birthday. I like to get a massage or facial, or both, take my time at the steam shower, and savor a good read with the endless supply of cappuccino, fresh fruits and mini sandwiches. I never understood why some women would rush out of the spa right after their massages. Just like they rush out of yoga class, right before the dead man's pose meditation. Hey, that's the best part of the class!

My 12-year-old said, "There are two downsides of getting old -- One, you get wrinkles, and... I don't remember the other one".

We all laughed. Yup, memory loss is certainly a sign of aging.

I said, "Well, I guess sometimes ignorance is bliss". My 10-year-old asked, "What do you mean ignorance is bliss?"

"What I mean is, sometimes not knowing or not remembering is a good thing", I continued, "Sometimes, you have to choose what to remember and what to forget. If you choose to forget all the bad things that happened, you will end up with all happy memories of your life".

His eyes lit up. "Oh, I get it! It's like that story that God gave us two boxes, one to hold things that make us happy, and the other one to hold the things that make us sad, and the second box has a hole on the bottom so all the bad memories will fall out."

I was amazed by his quick and profound response. But, he didn't stop there.

"I think the second box should be connected to a paper shredder, so all the bad memories can be shredded." He was all excited by this genius thought.

That reminds me of another great birthday ritual. I told my children that a person's birthday is a new beginning of a new year. It's a good time to set the intention of what you would like to be, have and experience in the year to come, and let go of what you no longer want. For example, you can make a list of beliefs, thoughts and behaviors that no longer serve you, or resonate with you (or who you would like to be), and then you can either burn or shred the paper. I suggest that they can do this either before their own birthdays, or at the end of the year, on New Year's Eve. They both excitedly exclaimed, "Oh yeah, let's BURN it!"

I know, it's a great feeling to make that declaration, and burn that piece of paper. Paper shredder is a good alternative, but, it just doesn't quite give the same kind of satisfaction. LOL! I guess this will be our new tradition for this year's New Year's Eve. We can use our fireplace for this ritual. That'd be fun.

You do not need to wait until your birthday, or the New Year's Eve to do this, though. Someone said that it's completely fair that everyone gets a brand new 24-hours day, every day. Each new day is full of opportunities and possibilities. Anytime you wish, you can decide to make it a new beginning. Anytime you wish, you can make a conscious choice to banish all negativity in your life, and focus only on the positive and the present moment. Anytime you wish, you can let go of past hurt, forgive others and yourself, and move on with your life. Anytime you wish, you can declare independence from your limiting beliefs and negative self-talk, and choose to live up to your full potential. Anytime you wish, you can stop being a victim, take 100% responsibility for yourself, and become the master of your own life. Anytime you wish, you can choose to practice self-love and self-compassion, and nurture yourself the way you truly deserve. Anytime you wish, you can choose to forget your limitations (even just for a moment), and believe in the possibilities instead. Anytime you wish, you can decide to take actions and go after your dreams.

Anytime you wish, you can choose to start anew. It takes an intention, set with your heart of hearts, and followed by your actions.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. What would you do?

The choice is yours.

Blessings,
Hueina

Carnival of Healing #129: Spring Renewal
Welcome to Carnival of Healing #129: Spring Renewal. After a long, cold winter in Northern Jersey, I'm really happy to see signs of Spring finally showing up in my area. The tulips and daffodils are sprouting in my yard, and the trees will follow very shortly. First Day of Spring is just around the corner, and my birthday is coming, too. This time of year always brings me much anticipation, hope, and I crave for change and renewal. It's a new beginning, a perfect time for healing and renewal.

I'm impressed by the quantity and quality of posts that were submitted this week. This carnival is really growing. Some people submitted more than one post. Since the carnival guideline says not to give more than one link to each blog, I took the liberty to choose only one post from each blogger. Let's dive into the many wonderful offerings from this week's carnival.

Spiritual and Emotional Healing

Alvaro Fernandez presents The Power of Mindsight- by Daniel Goleman posted at Brain Fitness. How do you free yourself from prisons of the past? I've always believed that we never stop growing and evolving on our life's journey, and no matter what happened in the past, we can create a new life of our choice. It's great to see that scientists have physical evidence of such growth. Yes it takes time, patience, and courage but it can be done.

Dr. Mike Skinner at meditation for the masses shares what he learned from Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard's teaching in Happiness Through Meditation. Matthieu Richard argues that "happiness is not pleasure, that it is a much deeper, more authentic reflection of our true nature, which paradoxically, can be present even when we’re sad", and meditation is his preferred method of cultivating happiness.

Alex Blackwell wrote an inspirational post Four Rocks to Grasp in Life posted at The Next 45 Years. The four rocks are: Passion, Forgiveness, Surrender and Hope. For me, personally, it's hard to reach for the rock of surrender sometimes, but it's often exactly what I must do to break the resistance and move forward. This post is a great reminder.

Albert Foong argues that most of us misunderstood the true spirit of giving, as evidenced in many Christmas stories. He presents a different perspective in The Art of Giving What You Don’t Have » Personal Development - The Urban Monk posted at Urban Monk.

To combat the "occupational hazards" of being an adult, David B. Bohl offers 5 Ways to Reconnect to Your Inner Child, including create, nap, play, take up childhood hobbies and daydream, posted at Slow Down Fast Today!.

Hidden anger can damage relationships and also eat you from inside. Ananga shows us the signs of hidden anger, and How Your Journal Can Help You Let off Steam in a Healthy Way posted at Ananga Sivyer's Living by Design Blog.

We all need to define our own success based on our true passion & values, instead of what others want from us. Lovelyn shares her example in Defining Success and Achieving It posted at The Art of Balanced Living.

Mark Ivar Myhrei presents The Burdens We Bear posted at Emotional Times. Mark states, "Burden comes from demanding that someone else must be responsible for my life". It also comes from resistance to change. He offers an exercise to rid the burden so you can soar instead.

Jenny shares her newfound love for knitting and reminds us to Take Time For Yourself posted at the so called me.

It's important to take charge of your emotional health. Shaheen Lakhan offers 10 tips, drawn from her own experience of overcoming depression, in Fighting Depression: 10 Step Do-It-Yourself Approach posted at GNIF Brain Blogger.

Through working with his life coach, Roger found a way to break out of a rut in Life Really Is Amazing Even When It Doesn’t Seem So posted at The Happy and Prosperous Blog. I’ve also found it very powerful when I can help my life coaching clients see the big picture, and focus on gratitude. One of my favorite exercises is “Top 3 Things” — go about your day while keeping a mental list of the top 3 things that happen to you that day. You will inevitably focus on “what’s going right” and feel great all day long!

Astrid Lee wrote a detailed introduction to gemstones and crystals that could help you attract financial abundance, including instructions of making a grid for this purpose. According to Astrid, the grid has worked for her from day one. Read all about it in Crystals for Abundance, posted at We Are One World Healing.

MBB shares his experience and advice about laser eye surgery in My Lasik Laser Eye Surgery posted at Money Blue Book.

Healthcare

As a former RN and, in many cases, a patient myself, I know well that many skillful doctors have horrible bedside manners. When it comes to life and death situations, would you choose a doctor like that, or one that really cares? Charles H. Green presents two compelling cases in Who(m) Do You Trust? posted at Trust Matters.

Neeelakantha presents 50 Easy Tips to Lower Your Healthcare Expenses posted at RN Central. It's worth checking out - I bet you've never thought of some of those tips!

Jose DeJesus MD presents Ancillary Services - Supplemental Medical Practice Income posted at ACTIONABLE NEWS FOR THE PHYSICIAN BUSINESSMEN. He suggested numerous ancillary services that could complement different medical practices to provide additional income for the physicians and valuable services for their patients.
