The 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers

The Working Mother magazine has published "The 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" this year. The magazine used seven main criteria as the basis for its judgments: workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs and company culture.

The top 10 companies that best satisfied the seven criteria were: Abbott Laboratories; Bon Secours Richmond Health System; Ernst & Young LLP; HSBC USA Inc.; IBM Corp.; JPMorgan Chase & Co.; Patagonia Inc.; PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP; Principal Financial Group, and S.C. Johnson & Son Inc.

IBM and Johnson & Johnson are the only companies that have been on the list every year since it was initiated 21 years ago.

Working Mother CEO Carol Evans, who authored the book "This Is How We Do It: The Working Mothers' Manifesto," said that in order to retain female employees, a growing number of companies are offering customized schedules and improved benefits. For example, IBM offers new mothers the option to take up to 144 weeks of leave. Some companies also offer emergency child care.

"Our country needs women to have babies, our companies need women's brainpower and time," she said. "Those two things going together really demand that companies wake up to this new culture."

According to the magazine's survey, there is growing concern among companies that they will lose qualified female employees if they do not upgrade their benefits. Compared to the "old days" when companies demanded that you either work full-time or not-at-all, this is certainly a welcoming trend for all working mothers & their families.

The Symptoms of Inner Peace
THE SYMPTOMS OF INNER PEACE
by Saskia Davis (Copyright 1984. All rights reserved.)

Be on the lookout for symptoms of inner peace. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to inner peace and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.

Some signs and symptoms of inner peace:
* A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
* An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
* A loss of interest in judging other people.
* A loss of interest in judging self.
* A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
* A loss of interest in conflict.
* A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom.)
* Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
* Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.
* Frequent attacks of smiling.
* An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.
* An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

WARNING: If you have some or all of the above symptoms, please be advised that your condition of inner peace may be so far advanced as to not be curable. If you are exposed to anyone exhibiting any of these symptoms, remain exposed only at your own risk.

1. Welcome & Announcements

September marks the beginning of a new school year, and brings so many new opportunities and possibilities. Kid are back to school, and for many parents it's time to go back to work. For me, this is the "natural" time of year to re-affirm my priorities, review my progress and re-commit to finishing the year strong. Like everyone else, I make New Year's Resolutions, do the budget and set targets in January, but September is a much better time for me to get serious about my goals. January always seems too rushed after the holidays, and frankly, in the dead of winter I'm just not as inspired!

One of the goals I set for myself was to stay fit and healthy. OK, I set this goal every single year (who doesn't?), but since I just turned 40 this year, it has special meaning for me. Ironically, I've had several health issues this year. Nothing major, but enough to consume considerable amount of my energy, time and of course, money. For example, I spent MANY hours this summer in physical therapy and chiropractic care because of mild disc herniations in both my neck and lower back. Talk about the pain in the neck (literally)!! I've had some solitary time to meditate on some "life stuff" on the traction table. Do you know what defines you? You can read about it here.

If you know me, you know that's not gonna stop me from pursuing my dreams. A few months ago, I set a goal to compete in a Chinese Kung Fu tournament in September. I started taking Kung Fu and Tai Chi Sword classes this year, and I know for me to do well in something, I need to challenge myself. However, as summer came and I was spending all that time in tests and treatments, I started to feel unsure about the tournament. There was less than 2 weeks left and I didn't even own a uniform. I finally had to ask myself: "Are you 100% committed or just sort-of, kind-of want to do this?" It's time to clean up my act. So, I got my Kung Fu uniform and matching tassels for my sword, and I AM competing this Saturday for my very first Kung Fu tournament. It WILL be a new adventure and fun experience for me. It will certainly make a good bedtime story for my future grandchildren. Wish me luck!
The year is almost three-quarters gone, but it's still not too late to make 2006 your best year ever. The year is NOT over until we do the final countdown in front of the Times Square! Why not take time to review your goals this week? Check your sales forecasts and your budget. If you had a weight loss goal, get on that bathroom scale and have a reality check. Get a calendar and plot some graphs to see how you're doing. Then, use that information to end 2006 on target and going strong! Make it happen! Whatever you want to achieve, begin today!

And, if you'd like coaching to be more productive, drop me an email. I have a couple of openings for individual clients and several spots to do trainings with your business or group this year. If you'd like to talk about possibilities, contact me at Hueina@BeyondHorizonCoaching.com. Let's get to work!

The Easiest Plan in the World for Getting Whatever You Want

-- by Andreas Ohrt

Wouldn't you love to have a simple plan for creating whatever you want in life? Being human, we tend to make everything more complicated than it needs to be. But changing your life does not have to be difficult. In fact, it is very easy. There are four simple core principles at the heart of the creation process. In this short article, I have tried to make this knowledge as simple as humanly possible. I want every single person reading this to be able to take this information and use it, easily and quickly. Here, then, is the simplest possible explanation of the power of your creative energy. Follow these four steps, and any goal can be yours.

*** STEP ONE: KNOW WHAT YOU WANT ***

Yes, it seems so obvious, doesn't it? You must know what you want in order to get what you want. Yet this most basic fist step is missed by the majority of people. You must know what you want as specifically as possible. This is the magic first step.Daydreaming about your future will not bring you what you want. Waiting for life to work out the way you've always expected won't bring you what you want. The only way to get what you want is to decide, with clarity and focus, exactly what you want to create. So how do you know what you want? Well, it's very simple. Write down your desires, your dreams, and everything that you want for your life. Then pick the one thing on your list that you know you could accomplish if you dedicated some energy to it. Pick that one and forget about the rest. Pick the very next goal in the creation of your life and go for it. Focus, focus, focus. Don't waste your energy wishing and dreaming for a million and one things. Pick one and go with it. Just as the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, so does the journey to your ideal life begin with a single goal. So begin with an easy, do-able goal, so far unaccomplished, plug it into this 4-step system. Write down as specifically and exactly what it is you will create. After it's finished, move on to the next goal.

*** STEP TWO: FOCUS ON WHAT YOU WANT ***

You must give positive focus, energy, and attention to your goal. Settinga goal and then forgetting about it will not do. You must imprint it onyour conscious and subconscious mind until it becomes reality. Remember, thought is blindingly fast compared to the manifestation ofthoughts into reality. Of course, as you practice this system and becomemore confident, your thoughts will come into reality much more quickly. But as a beginner, you must keep your energy and intention directly onyour goal. You must focus on what you want, not on what you don't want. Stop complaining about things that are not the way you want them to be. Instead, decide how you would like them to be and focus on that. Whenëver you find yourself giving attention to some area of your life with whichyou are unhappy, immediately ask yourself "What do I want in this situation?" and focus on the answer. Take a look at your goal every day, give it positive focus and attention. Before you fall asleep and after you wake up, instead of worrying about your problems, imagine your goal successfully attained, and feel how youwould feel if your goal was accomplished. Go to sleep with this feeling, and your subconscious mind will quickly find a way to bring it into your reality.

*** STEP THREE: TAKE ACTION NOW! ***

You must take action towards your goal, and you must take action right nöw! There is no other time that you can act. The past is gone, the future is an illusion. Making plans to take action is not action. You must takeaction right nöw. There is always something that you can do to propel you towards your goal. It doesn't matter how tiny the action is, or how insignificant you might feel it is, you must do it. There is always some small step you can take. Take that step. You must convince your subconscious mind that you are serious about accomplishing your goal, and there is nothing more convincing than taking action. No matter where you are along your path to your goal, no matter how near or far you might feel to be, there is always an obvious next step you can take. Take that step in this present moment. Right nöw. If you have trouble figuring out what to do, or are paralyzed into inaction because it seems there are too many things to do, just do this: Make a list of all the things that need to happen in order for your goal to arrive. List all the intermediary steps that you will experience as your goal begins to enter your life. Somewhere on this list will be the obvious next step. Do it. Do it now!

*** STEP FOUR: CHOOSE THE SAME THING EVERY DAY, AND NEVER GIVE UP ***

You must be consistent. You must, consistently, choose the same goal everyday until your goal is accomplished. You cannot send out constantly changing vague wishes into the universe and expect to create results in the real world. It's as simple as ordering a meal in a restaurant. You must decide what you want and then ask for it. If you can't make up your mind the waiter will simply serve someone else until you're ready. If you do not provide the universe with a specific goal which you consistently take action toward, your "meal" will never come to you. And the most important sëcret of all, DON'T GIVE UP UNTIL YOUR GOAL IS ACCOMPLISHED.

Living an Inspired Life

I have this pink flowering plant in my back yard that attracts butterflies. Every summer we see monarch butterflies visiting this particular plant. Even though I've seen it so many times, I'm still impressed by how beautiful these butterflies are.

Well, after reading Dr. Wayne Dyer's new book "Inspiration", I'm even more fascinated and impressed by these amazing creatures. Dr. Dyer talked about how the monarch butterflies, with tiny little brain and paper thin wings, were born in Brazil and somehow they remember how to migrate thousands of miles and then return to the exact same branch where they were born. He also talked about his own "in-spirit" encounter with a monarch butterfly that he was convinced to be his old friend Jack who loved the monarch. The butterfly stayed with him for hours and he even took a picture with the butterfly on his hand (that's the photo on his book cover).

While I was reading the book, I realized that I hadn't seen any monarch in my garden this year. The summer was kind of rainy and cool, which was disappointing, and now I felt even worse. Then, one day while I was getting ready to go somewhere with my kids, I spotted a large monarch butterfly hovering over my flowers. Even though I was in a rush to go out, I decided to grab my camera and go outside to take pictures instead. I'm SO glad I did. That was the only time in the whole summer I saw monarch in my garden this year. I must've missed them every time they came. I couldn't get the monarch to pose WITH me, like Dr. Wayne Dyer did, but at least I got some pretty good shots, and here is one of them. (go to my other blog to see more photos I took)

I was deeply saddened by the passing of the world famous wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin. I was not that familiar with him before, except that he was the Crocodile Hunter. After watching several tribute programs to him on Animal Planet, I have the upmost respect for him. He said in an interview that, he wanted to be remembered for his passion, his enthusiasm and wild life conservation. He said "I was put on this earth to save wild life". He found his passion and life purpose since he was just a little kid, and he lived his purpose till the very end. Blessed are the ones who know and live their passion and purpose. You don't see that every day.

When you "live on purpose", your life is aligned with your core values and life purpose, you have clear priorities, you feel inspired & energized to pursue your vision and dreams, and everything seems to fall into place. You can't wait to get up every day to do the things you love. As Dr. Wayne Dyer said, living an inspired life means you live "in spirit". So, how do you live an inspired life?

A Chinese proverb goes "You cannot make something happen, but you can create a space in which what you want is more likely to happen." What can you do to create such a space? Dr. Wayne Dyer offers this "12-step program" for living an inspired life.

  1. Unclutter your life -- get rid of stuff you no longer need
  2. Clear your calendar of unwanted and unnecessary activities -- learn to say no
  3. Be sure to keep your free time free
  4. Choose to take time to do things that keep you inspired
  5. Return to the simplicity of nature -- spend time outdoors
  6. Keep a distance between you and your critics
  7. Take some time for your health
  8. Don't forget to play
  9. Slow down
  10. Remove any debts from your life
  11. Take your attention off what everything costs, but instead focus on their values
  12. Remember your spirit -- who you really are

What Defines You?
© copyright 2006 Hueina Su, Beyond Horizon Coaching

One of the goals I set for myself this year was to stay fit and healthy. OK, I set this goal every single year (who doesn't?!), but since I just turned 40 this year, it has special meaning for me. Ironically, I've had several health issues this year. Nothing major, but enough to consume considerable amount of my energy, time and of course, money. For example, I spent MANY hours this summer in physical therapy and chiropractic care because of 4 (mild) disc herniations in both my neck and lower back. Talk about pain in the neck (literally)! OUCH!

My PT treatments also include neck and lumbar tractions. Ironically, the 20 minutes I had to spend on the traction table (2-3 times a week) was about the only solitary time I had for the whole summer (besides those two short weeks when my kids were at summer camp). If you know me, you would know my kids and I are very close and I do enjoy being with them. However, you would also know how important it is for me to have regular solitary time, to be with my own thoughts, and how difficult it was for me to not being able to be ALONE, on top of being in physical pain!

At the beginning, I tried to "make the most of my time" on the traction table by listening to audio books & teleclass recordings on my iPod. I even told my coach about it and he was very proud of me. However, once I realized that this was the precious little "alone time" I had, it was clear that I would rather use this time to meditate, think about "life stuff", or JUST BE.

So here is part of my "meditation from the traction table".

I was annoyed and frustrated by the pain & discomfort. I've tried almost all the PT treatments they offer, plus chiropractic adjustments and trigger point injections, etc. I would get some relief but the symptoms would return, sometimes in just a few hours. Once the MRI confirmed the disc herniations, I understood why my body was acting that way, but I also realized that I might have to live with these symptoms for a long time.

Now, I have two choices: I can let this medical condition define me and confine me, or I can CHOOSE to deal with it the best I can and still pursue my dreams and goals IN SPITE OF IT.

When I found out that I was born with only one kidney, it didn't stop me. When I was diagnosed with hypertension at age 37, it didn't stop me, either. I simply refuse to be labeled and defined by my medical conditions, and let them dictate how I live my life. I know I wouldn't have gotten my Black Belt and experienced many other things if I had let these things hold me back. So, you see, it was a no-brainer for me this time.

Once I made that choice, I no longer felt like a victim. I am in control again.

Yes, my neck still hurts every single day, but I can deal with it.

How about you? What defines you? Is it your finance, body weight, education, ethnicity, your job, your spouse, or your kids? Do you let your circumstances hold you back, or use them as excuses so you can remain a victim and not take 100% responsibility for your life?

The Little Things

Every time there was a big disaster, there were always people who somehow survived due to serendipity. Here are some examples I read:

"As you might know, the head of a company survived 9/11
because his son started kindergarten.

Another fellow was alive
because it was his turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because
her alarm clock didn't go off in time.

One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike
because of an auto accident.

One of them
missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and
had to take time to change.

One's
car wouldn't start.

One went back to
answer the telephone.

One had a child that dawdled and
didn't get ready as soon as he should have.

One couldn't
get a taxi.

The one that struck me the most was the man who
put on a new pair of shoes that morning,
took the various means to get to work
but before he got there, he developed
a blister on his foot.
He stopped at a drugstore
to buy a Band-Aid.
That is why he is alive today."

Next time when you are...
Stuck in traffic,
Miss an elevator,
Wait forever in a doctor's office,
Turn back to answer a ringing telephone,
Your morning seems to be going wrong,
The children are slow getting dressed,
You can't seem to find the car keys,
You hit every traffic light.....

All the little things that annoy you
Don't get mad or frustrated
Think instead: this is exactly where the Universe wants me to be
at this very moment....

Who knows? It could very likely be a blessing in disguise.

The Way to Bring Peace

In remembrance of 9/11.....

"It is time to fill the world with strong and powerful deeds. It is common knowledge that no great captain in the world has ever destroyed all of his enemies and lived with a sense of satisfaction. If one enemy is killed, two more will appear. It is important we cultivate love and compassion to all the sentient beings which is the way to bring peace to all."

This year marks the 5th anniversary of 9-11, a life-altering event that changed so many lives and our whole world. This is one of those event that you will never forget... I bet you still remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you first learned the tragic news.

Do you also remember where you were in life, in your career, in your relationships back then? Do you remember your hopes and dreams, or your goals back then? Now, 5 years later, how much of your goals have you accomplished? Are you at a better place in your life? Or are you still wishing & hoping and nothing got done? Perhaps you let your fear or limiting beliefs hold you back, or worse, you feel like a powerless victim of your circumstances.

If there is one thing that I've learned from 9-11, that is life is too short. Nobody is guaranteed a tomorrow. All we really have is today, this present moment. If there is something you want to do, some dream you want to pursue, do it now. Begin today.

It doesn't matter what you have or have not accomplished so far in life. Your past does not dictate your future; nor does your circumstances. Every single day we are given fresh, precious 24 hours, a clean slate, to create whatever we believe is possible. It's always your choice, your next move.

Take a moment to think about 9-11. Think about what it means to you. Then think about your dreams and goals. Where do you want to be 5 years from now? 10 years from now? What's the one thing (or 10 things) that you absolutely have to do before you die? Get very clear & specific about your goals, and give yourself some deadlines. As Diana Scharf Hunt said, "Goals are dreams with deadlines." Once you have clear goals, you can then design a step-by-step action plan to achieve them.

Get whatever support you need to achieve your goals. Get more training. Join a mastermind group. Ask someone to keep you motivated. Hire a coach. It's OK to ask for help. But, the important thing is to TAKE ACTION, and keep moving forward toward your goals.

President Theodore Roosevelt once said, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."

You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start in order to become great.

As Dr. Wayne Dyer often says, "Don't die with your music still in you". Whatever you want to do, begin today.

Our Lives in Money

I read this from the newsletter by Michael Angier, founder and CIO (Chief Inspiration Officer) of SuccessNet. This story was submitted by David Merkel Golan.
------------------

OUR LIVES IN MONEY

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?" Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the $20 dollar bill up. He then asked, "Who still wants it?" Still the hands were up in the air. "Well", he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air. "My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson", he said, "No matter what I did to the m0ney, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20."

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you won't lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless . . . especially to those who love you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or whom we know but by WHO WE ARE.

You are special - Don't EVER forget that.

1. Welcome & Announcements

Summer has come to an end, and for most parents on the East Coast, it's Back-to-School time. Are your children prepared? Are YOU prepared? Check out the Resources section to see some Back-to-School resource links. My daughter is going to middle school this year, and it's a major milestone for both of us. So, I thought for this issue's featured article I would write about managing life's changes with ease.

I have done a major makeover of my website -- the website layout & look is completely different, and I've added a lot more contents & some new services. For example, do you know that I speak both English and Mandarin Chinese fluently? I can do private life coaching in Chinese-- I just didn't think of adding that on my website before. I'm planning on offering monthly Teleforum and online group coaching program. If you are interested, or know someone who is interested, please let me know. There is also a new section of "Resource Center for Women Who Nurture" with recommended services, books and useful links sorted by category. Please make sure you check out my new & improved website.

I've added a few Teleclasses and live workshops for this Fall. Please mark your calendar, and I will email you more details as they become available. Stay tuned.

Email has become an essential part of our modern life. It is a convenient tool for us to communicate and stay in touch. However, it can also create much confusion, as illustrated in this story: The Accidental Email.

We all know that exercise is important for your health. Here are some out-of-the-box thoughts on exercise for those days when you really, really don't feel like exercising...

The Importance of Mental Fitness

In his Sales Success Newsletter, Brian Tracy wrote about the importance of mental fitness in selling. I think these principles apply not just to selling, or business-building in general, but also in managing many challenges in life.
---------------------

The Importance of Mental Fitness
by Brian Tracy

The Hard Work of Selling
Selling is hard work. It is one of the most difficult jobs in our economy. As a salesperson, you face continual rejection, potential failure, persistent disappointment, setbacks, obstacles and difficulties not experienced by most people. Selling is not easy and it has never been easy. It never will be easy. It will always be varying degrees of difficult, from hard to very hard, to very, very hard. And to be successful in selling you must be tough, as well.

Your Attitude Makes The Difference
In selling, your attitude is probably eighty percent of your success. Your attitude is the outward expression of everything that you are, and everything that you have become over the course of your lifetime. Your attitude has the greatest single impact on the people that you deal with. The development of a positive mental attitude is the indispensable requirement for great success in your field.

Learn to Bounce Back
Psychologists have defined the "hardy personality" as the type of personality that is most suited to the rigors of the modern business world. The hardy personality, the personality you need to develop, is resilient, optimistic, tough, strong, and capable of bouncing back continually from temporary disappointments and defeats.

Respond Constructively to Stress
A positive mental attitude is a constructive response to stress. It is a solution-oriented, objective approach to difficulties that you face every single day. A positive mental attitude is expressed as a general optimism toward life and the inevitable challenges of earning a living. A positive mental attitude is the most outwardly identifiable quality of a winning human being, and it is the characteristic most closely identified with success in selling of all kinds.

Practice Mental Fitness Every Day
To become and remain physically fit, you must engage continuously in physical exercise. To become mentally fit, to develop the kind of attitude that leads on to success and happiness, you must engage in continuous mental exercise. It is a never ending process. Just as you do not achieve physical fitness and then discontinue physical exercise, you can not achieve mental fitness without working on it regularly, every day, like breathing in and breathing out.

Action Exercises
Here are two things you can do immediately to put these ideas into action:

First, decide in advance that, from now on, you are going to respond in a positive and constructive way to each and every stress situation in your life. Be tough!

Second, practice mental fitness every day by forcing yourself to remain cheerful and optimistic in the face of difficulties and disappointments.

Remember, you can do it if you decide to!
