New Year's Resolutions May be Best Left Unmade

Resolutions may be best left unmade

Experts say people unrealistic in their goals for new year

Vanessa Vera • Daily Record • December 31, 2008

The advent of a brand new year brings reflections on the year past, speculations about what is next and, for many, the onset of New Year's resolutions.

But resolutions often don't make it past the end of January, so the advice of some experts is: don't make 'em.

"I'm wondering why people keep making the same old New Year's resolutions that often fail within a month," said Hueina Su, certified life coach, author and president of Denville-based Beyond Horizon Coaching.

New Year's resolutions are overrated, Su said, putting too much expectation on just one day.

"People often have this unrealistic expectation when they make their New Year's resolutions," Su said. "Either the goals are too big, or they don't have the right action plan to back it up. As a result, they lose momentum and give up quickly. In a way, they are setting themselves up for failure," Su said. "If you're ready to make changes, you can start any day of the year - not just the New Year's Day."

To help people have the right intentions for the New Year, Su suggests five "master keys": be clear about what you want, find your big "why," have a plan of attack to achieve goals, hold yourself accountable, and get support.

Psychologist William Babula, administrator for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Services at St. Clare's Hospital, said this is the time of year when diet and exercise resolutions come out, but usually die within three months.

"Sometimes the intentions are good, but a lot of folks make the demands on themselves way too high. If you're going to undertake some of the standard (resolutions) -- such as weight control, smoking cessation, exercise -- you want to keep it simple and, above all, very reasonable," Babula said.

"You don't have to vow to enter a triathlon or run a marathon," Babula advised. Rather, starting simple and making something more of a permanent lifestyle change than a short-term goal should be the focus, he said.

Also, it might not be necessary to give up something -- such a particular type of food -- completely, but simply to limit it, he added.

Other more rewarding resolutions also come up this time of year, Babula said, such as spending more time with family and refocusing on a career. Goals, he said, don't have to be "Guinness Book of World Record-kinds of resolutions."

Regardless of the resolution, Babula said, it must be meaningful to the person undertaking it in order for it to be successful.

People often set resolutions, he explained, because of the theory that "it's a new year, new start, new beginning and that's kind of inbred in the culture ... it's always kind of that restart on Jan. 1." However, he said, "You can think about these things anytime. You don't have to wait until the last week in December."

If, however, people choose to take on New Year's resolutions, Babula suggests they first set reasonable, realistic goals and then understand that change is a slow process. Babula suggests allowing at least 30 days to retrain and reprogram one's habits before saying something is not working. Hopefully, over time, he said, the change will become automatic.

The United Way of Morris County offers on its Web site an alternative to more traditional New Year's resolutions -- it encourages people to take up volunteering and make a difference in 2009.

"When individuals and organizations work together, we can make a huge difference," said John Franklin, CEO at United Way of Morris County. "Living United means being a part of the change."

From Heartbreak to Bliss - My Story
Tonight my husband and I, along with our children, went out to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. Our anniversary was yesterday, but, we got snowed in. So the celebration moved to today. We went to a restaurant famous for garlic-infused dishes, and the four of us had a wonderful time.

I couldn't help but feel so grateful and blessed -- for my health, my sweet husband, my beautiful children, my loving parents, my sisters and cousins who keep me sane, my dear friends who are always there for me, colleagues and clients who adore me, and I get to do what I love for a living, using my unique gifts and talents, and calling the shots.

My life was not always like this, though. I felt moved to tell you this story of mine that I almost never told anyone. Somehow I felt that someone -- maybe you, or someone you know -- needs to hear my story. You will know if that's the case.

Seventeen years ago, I was on the verge of killing myself.

I was in graduate school, going through a particularly troublesome relationship. The guy I was dating cheated on me, with a girl I knew. In fact, all my roommates and other girlfriends knew about this, but, nobody told me. Imagine my shock when I found out the truth! The guy decided to break up with both of us. What's worse, my roommates were friends with the other girl, and they both rushed to comfort her, leaving me alone. They told me that she was totally heartbroken and hysterical. Their reason was, I was "the strong one" and the other girl needed their help more. Totally ridiculous, isn't it?

All of a sudden, I lost my boyfriend, roommates and most of my girlfriends. I felt too embarrassed to tell my parents or sisters, since none of them "approved" the guy to begin with (Besides, they were hundreds and thousands of miles away). You see, he was the third guy who cheated on me within 3 years. After the first two, my self-esteem got so low that I thought if I picked a guy who's "below my level", he would truly appreciate me and not cheat on me. Let me tell you, it only made me feel so much worse to be dumped by a sub-standard guy.

What's worse, I found out soon afterwards that he secretly got back with the other girl. Feeling totally betrayed, humiliated and alone, I fell into the deep abyss of depression. I was drowning in self-pity and self-hatred. What is wrong with ME? Why wouldn't he choose me? I went to see a counselor on campus, but it wasn't very helpful. I couldn't focus in school, and could barely function. On many occasions, I thought of killing myself, but couldn't bare the thought of hurting my parents this way. That winter seemed so cold and never-ending.

In times like this, you know who your true friends are. What saved me from a total breakdown was a group of guy friends whom I played tennis with every weekend. Unlike girlfriends, guys don't ask me to talk about my feelings, unless I choose to. The truth is, they were probably too afraid to ask me. They simply kept me company without probing. We continued to play tennis, play cards, and go to movies, as if nothing happened. Silly as it sounds, that's the part of my life that remained "normal", and I desperately needed that. I don't think they realized how much they had helped me. I'm forever grateful for them.

Back then, I rented a small room with an entire wall of windows. Somehow I got interested in gardening and planted many potted plants in my room, where I stayed most of my spare time. It felt like therapy, I guess, to take care of the plants and see them grow. At least some of us were getting the TLC and unconditional love.

I continued to wade through the thick fog of depression like a living dead. This went on for months, until one morning. I woke up to a sun-filled room. The sunbeam shined brightly through the windows onto the baby green leaves of my ivy. It was so beautiful, and full of life.

Somehow, something inside of me woke up. I looked around my room, at myself, and felt totally ridiculous. The world is so beautiful, and I have so much to be grateful for. How could I be thinking of killing myself? Then, I felt FURIOUS!! What am I doing?!! How did I let myself go so far, for a guy that's a total jerk? He does not deserve my love at all. My anger finally woke me up, and made me see the truth.

I deserve SO much more.

That was one of the most important turning points in my life. I realized that I was attracting all the wrong guys, because I had very low self-worth and self-esteem. My years of studying psychology helped me see the root cause and patterns of my problem. You see, growing up, my parents never covered their disappointment about the fact that I am a girl (they wanted a boy). I felt like no matter how hard I tried, I was never good enough for them. In order to keep me from being distracted by boys (so I would study hard), my parents also told me that I was not pretty at all, which I believed for more than 20 years. Can you see why I had such low self-esteem and trouble in relationships?

That morning, however, something inside of me changed. I knew I had two choices -- either continuing on the self-destruction path, or, go the other direction and make some changes. I didn't know what coaching was back then, but, I basically coached myself through it. I decided to move on, and never to see that guy again. Instead of diving in another new relationship as I used to, I decided to focus on nurturing myself and building myself up again. I decided to make myself happy.

Looking back, that was the time I turned inwards, and embarked on my own journey of self-awareness and spiritual understanding. I found joy and peace. More importantly, I found myself.

A few years later, I was married to my husband and our daughter was just born. I ran into the other girl on the street one day. We just said hello and good-bye. You know when you are completely over someone. They do not affect you any more. I felt totally at peace. I heard that she married that guy, and I hope they have a happy life. Even though it was extremely painful, if it weren't for them, I might not have gone through my transformation and found my happiness.

I firmly believe that it was my choice to focus on building myself back then that made all the difference. I got fed up, got angry, and turned my life around.

What about you? Are you fed up yet? If your life is not working no matter how hard you try, or, if you seem to get so close to what you want only to lose it again, I strongly recommend that you look at your inner landscape and work on building yourself first. Your outer world is a true reflection of your inner landscape. When you have low self-esteem, undeserving mentality, and/or self-defeating beliefs, it's much more difficult to attract and KEEP what you desire.

Someone once said that in order to achieve your goal, you need to become the person who owns that goal. In other words, you need to build yourself up, from the inside out, to match your goal. Coaching is an effective process to change your inner landscape, so you can build yourself up to achieve your goals. A great coach can help you see your unique gifts and talents, and what's possible for you. I'm blessed to have worked with several exceptional coaches in the past few years, who helped me see who I am and what I'm truly capable of, and that has made a HUGE difference in my business and in my life.

If you have not experienced coaching, I strongly recommend that you give yourself this gift. I'm offering a 12-week group coaching program New Year's Coaching Intensive. We will work on the "inner work" as well as the "outer work" during our 12-week program. Get all the details here.

Listen to the Teleclass Beyond New Year's Resolutions -- learn the 5 Master Keys to achieving your goals. Then sign up for my 12-week coaching intensive.

P.S. SAVE $100 -- early bird special expires at 5:00 pm EST on Friday, January 16th. Get all the details here.

365 days from now, will you be celebrating your massive SUCCESS in 2009, or, will you be pretty much STUCK at the same place, wishing things were different for you?

Will this FINALLY be the year that YOU achieve your dreams and goals?

There are 5 Master Keys that's CRITICAL to achieving any goals, and you need ALL 5 of them to succeed. I talked about these 5 Master Keys in my Teleclass Beyond New Year's Resolutions this Monday night. If you have not got a chance to listen to the recording, it's important that you do so ASAP.

==> http://budurl.com/nyintensive

Not only will you come away with clarity about what YOU want to achieve this year, I've laid out a PLAN to help you to get there. I will personally guide you through the process, and take you under my wings for the entire 3 months to catapult you to your success!

Research has shown that more than 35% of people drop out and fail their New Year's Resolutions by the end of January. Imagine what a HUGE difference it will make, if you can stick to your goals and work intensively with me for 3 whole months!
Furthermore, if you would like to SAVE $100, you MUST take fast action!

Because of a glitch in my email management system, this email that I intended to send out early this week did not go out. I want to make sure you have enough time to listen to my Teleclass recording, and check out the program details. I care deeply about helping YOU succeed, and don't want you to miss out on this great opportunity. So, I'm extending the early bird deadline to next Friday January 16th, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. You must take action now to SAVE $100.

Like I said, there are 5 Master Keys to success, and you must have ALL 5 of them. Do you have what it takes?

More importantly, what are you willing to do to make your goals a reality?

It's all up to YOU, and it all comes down to taking ACTION
. What sets super-successful people apart from "mere mortals" is that they are fully committed and they take FAST ACTION. That's the kind of people I'd like to work with.

If you are serious about reaching your goals this year, then take the first step, and listen to the Teleclass recording now:

12-Week New Year's Coaching Intensive

A goal without a plan is just wishful thinking! If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Do you have the comprehensive, solid action plan to achieve your goals?

The truth is, having a plan is not going to do you any good, if you cannot execute your action plan effectively, AND stick to it until you reach your goals.

Unfortunately, this is where MOST PEOPLE FAIL. They might have a BIG dream, and the PERFECT action plan, BUT they.....
-- cannot execute their plan
-- cannot stay motivated
-- cannot stay focused
-- get discouraged easily
-- procrastinate
-- cannot manage their time and tasks effectively
-- lose momentum and don't know how to get it back
-- give up as soon as they hit a rough patch
-- cannot break the old habits
-- doubt their own ability to reach their goals
-- sabotage their own success
-- cannot handle setbacks
-- get dragged down by negative people, naysayers, doubters and dream-killers
-- fall off the wagon and don't know how to get back on track

Sounds familiar? Is one (or more) of these reasons why YOU failed at your goals in the past???

What makes you think this year will be different? Will this be the year you FINALLY overcome these barriers, and achieve your goals?

Are you SERIOUS about making your dreams a reality in 2009?

Ask yourself:
  • Are you committed to reaching your goals this year?
  • Are you ready, willing and able to take the necessary action to achieve your goals?
  • Are you ready, willing and able to invest in YOUR own future?

As a coach, I've seen so many people tried and failed. Commitment, Accountability and Support are 3 critical keys to ensure your success. Do you have ALL 3 of them in place?

If you said you are serious about your goals, but, you are not willing to take action and make the money & time investment, you are NOT fully committed to your goals. Basically, your goals are just something nice to have, but, you are not willing to work for it.

If that's the case, you can stop reading now. I cannot help you.

However, if you are serious about your goals, AND you are fully committed to reaching your goals this year, I'm committed to helping YOU succeed.

Many of you have been following me for years, and I appreciate your support. You have told me that you would like to hire me as your coach, but you just cannot afford my private coaching fee. I totally understand that. I am committed to helping YOU succeed. That is why I have designed this program just for YOU.

Thanks to books like Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul, more and more women have the opportunity to transform their lives by receiving support for putting themselves and their emotional and physical well-being first!”
-- Renee Peterson Trudeau, author, The Mother’s Guide to Self-Renewal: How to Reclaim, Rejuvenate and Re-Balance Your Life and president, Renee Trudeau & Associates, www.reneetrudeau.com

“The love one share with others starts from a seed of self love and it grows endlessly to enrich others. Everyday parents instinctively nurture their children as all animals do. However, Hueina shows you how to extend the love towards work and caring for others outside of family. She introduces ways to first achieve inner happiness and therefore bring happiness to others. I feel this book is really a guide book for everyone who cares about others, a professor mentoring a student, a master guiding an apprentice, and surely a caregiver for a patient. This book should be an owner's manual for life."
-- Shih-Fen Chow, MD, Board of Advisors, American Cancer Society Eastern Division - Asian Initiative

“Drawing on the rich cultural heritage of her Chinese family, Hueina Su artfully tells her story of love, family, relationships and the essence of the nurturer's soul.

By blending heartfelt anecdotes of her personal experiences, Hueina conveys her words of encouragement much the way you could imagine her caring for the most delicate patient.

By conveying a message of self-love, including exercises in recognizing one's needs, the author successfully brings her skills as a daughter, mother, nurse and certified life coach to the reader in a relaxed style that is sure to bring wisdom, strength and comfort to the reader.”
-- René Cantwell, Founder, Families of Loved Ones Magazine, Providing Strategies and Resources for Caregivers, www.familiesoflovedones.com

“Intensive Care for the Nurturer's Soul fills a much-needed market niche. Caregivers will find the author's advice practical, yet heartfelt. She guides the reader with 'baby steps' that are achievable by anyone involved in caregiving. Caregivers will know instantly that Hueina Su understands them and the difficult journey they are traveling.”
-- Christine Spear, Editor in Chief, Silk Purse Women magazine, www.SilkPurseWomen.com

"Huiena and I share a similar philosophy that self-care is not selfish, but serves the highest good of all. A healthy life offers a balance of give and take; of giving and receiving support. This is especially true to caregivers, parents, and any one in a helping or healing profession. And yet many of us stumble on the, "Yes, but how?" question. Huiena's book and experience provides a clear path for implementing this philosophy of self-care into practical steps, a pathway to balance and restoration. We can all benefit from her loving message, one that has the power to transform individual relationships as well as our society as a whole."

Tonight - New Year's Resolutions Makeover

The New Year is here! You know what this means -- you get to plan for a brand new year and start with a clean slate. If you're like most poeple, you make New Year Resolutions with the best intentions and high hopes to achieve your personal and career goals. You go with full force to lost weight, start a new business, find your soulmate, get a new job, build your dream home, have better relationships with your family, quit smoking, eat right, exercise more, learn a foreigh language, go back to school, etc.

However, the sad truth is that most people don't stick to their New Year Resolutions for long. In fact, one recent study from the University of Scranton, PA, showed that every January millions of American women resolve to lose weight and change their eating habits, but a quarter of them go back to their old ways within a week! By the end of January, that number rises to 36%. Less than 50% of participants stick to their goals past 6 months.

Pretty discouraging statistics, isn't it?

How about you? How many New Year's Resolutions have you made & broken in the last few years? What do you resolve to do this year?

The truth is, the "traditional" New Year's Resolutions simply don't work. In fact, many experts advise NOT make them at all.

But what about your dreams and goals? Will this be the year you FINALLY achieve your goals?

Listen, if you choose the wrong goals, or did not set your goals properly, you are setting yourself up for failure! You end up breaking your New Year's Resolutions (again), losing business opportunities/profit, staying stuck in the same place (or even become worse-off than last year), wasting precious time & money, and, of course, your self-esteem plummets as you beat yourself up over and over....

My goal is to help you avoid this painful outcome. If you are serious about making 2009 your best year ever, then come to this Teleclass. Bring your New Year's Resolutions for a makeover.

Handling Setbacks with Patience
At our last mastermind group, we checked in on everyone's status and progress. Two of us are writing books (respectively). My book is Intensive Care for the Nurturer's Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others. Randy hasn't told us his book title. We both set out to write our own book back in August, and neither completed the book by the deadlines we set for ourselves. Needless to say, we were a bit disappointed and wished we could show our books to our mastermind group.

Being a supportive group, other members tried to help us feel better by pointing out what else is in our lives and what we have accomplished. Randy got a lot on his plate - he was one of the presenters at the annual ICF conference, he is working hard on his coaching program and forming a new partnership, and, to top it off, he just had a brand new baby last month. I also have a lot going on -- keynote speaking at the Northeast Regional Oncology Nursing Conference and several other speaking engagements, coaching clients, teaching Teleclass, developing new products and group coaching programs, forming new strategic alliances, volunteer work, running businesses with my husband, not to mention raising two kids and volunteering at their schools. Not to give ourselves excuses, but, we do have very full plates, and we have both accomplished a lot in the last few months. Isn't it so common that we tend to focus on what we did not achieve and beat ourselves up, while overlooking all the other things we have accomplished?

Writing the book is an important project for me, but, there are so many other priorities in my life and business. It would be nice to lock myself in a resort to write my book, but, it's far from my reality. I realized that I wasn't being realistic when I set my goal in August. I totally didn't consider how little work I would be able to get done in August, with two kids home, family visiting and our vacation, etc. September was an extremely busy month, too, for our family and for my business. A bunch of exciting new projects and opportunities sidetracked me, and I lost my momentum in writing my book.

In addition, being a first-time author, I grossly under-estimated how much time and work it would take to write and edit the book, and all the back and forth with the publisher, the graphic designer, the editor, etc. I was influenced by all the gurus out there who said they wrote their books in as little as 24 hours, and thought it would be a breeze for me too. Wow, what a learning experience for me! I realized that the way I write takes a lot from me, and I need a lot of internal processing before I can write the words. It has to come straight from my heart, and sometimes it takes a long time. My colleagues in my mastermind group helped me see that my writing is very unique, and it touches people because it comes from my heart. I would be doing myself and my readers a disservice if I try to rush the process or change my style just to meet a certain deadline.

One thing is for sure -- it definitely doesn't help the progress by beating myself up. I did a reality check. Randy and I both started writing in August, and it's only been 4 months. Many authors took years to write their books. We are doing just fine. Seriously. I'd rather take the time, enjoy the writing process, and produce a book I'm proud of, than rushing to the finish line just for the sake of finishing the project. It would totally defeat the purpose if I'm stressing myself out and breaking down, while writing a book about Intensive Self-Care. Yeah, that would be the upmost irony, wouldn't it?

With the fresh outlook, I decided to cut myself a slack and just enjoy the holidays with my family. The writing will come naturally when I am relaxed and centered. I'd be more patient with myself, trusting that the book will get done when it's the right time.

By the way, I'm back on writing my book again and getting close to completion. Randy, on the other hand, decided to put his book on the back burner for the time being. When the right time comes, he will complet his book. I have no doubt about that.
