1. Welcome & Announcements

Summer is officially here. If you have children, they are probably out of school by now. I hope you have planned out the "perfect" summer for you and your family -- whether it's an action-packed, fun-filled, or totally laid-back, do-nothing kind of summer.

On June 12, 2007, the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners (NJAWBO) Essex Chapter hosted its annual Diversity Luncheon at Newark Museum. I'm proud to be part of the Planning Committee for this fabulous event that celebrates diversity and empowers women business owners to plant the seeds & grow their businesses. Whether you are a business owner, professional woman, or a stay-at-home mom, it's critical for your well-being and success to have adequate support, either from a mentor, life coach, support group, mastermind group, or a professional association such as NJAWBO.

Having support and accountability could make all the difference between reaching your goals and quitting before the finish line. If you would like to experience the power of coaching for yourself, contact me for a complimentary telephone coaching session.

In June, we've had two special FREE Teleclasses, each with very special guest speakers. I hope you have enjoyed these classes and got lots of ideas about planning for an engaging summer for your teens as well as shaping up for higher energy and better long-term health. You can visit the Teleclass Archives to listen to the recording of the Feature Teleclass.

The current Feature Teleclass is "Unleash the Full Potential of Your Lifestyle -- to lose weight, look great and gain the energy you need to succeed!" My guest speaker John Allen Mollenhauer, aka "JAM", founder of Performance Lifestyle System, shared his inspiring personal journey from an over-weight, burned out entrepreneur, to a fit & healthy, high-energy powerhouse that he is today, as well as many insights and tips on diets, exercise, weight loss, energy management and lifestyle change for long-term health. His knowledge and passion for these topics clearly came through in his presentation. I encourage you to listen to the recording of this Teleclass while it's still available.

"Why Are You So Stressed? Tips and Techniques For A Stress-free Life"

Chronic stress is linked to increased risks for many health issues and major diseases, for example, heart disease, hypertension, type-2 diabetes, neck or back pain, gastrointestinal problems, obesity, eating disorder, insomnia, just to name a few. It also has negative impacts on your relationships, work, and emotional well-being.

Nowadays, almost everybody is stressed. Should we just give up and accept that being stressed (and all the consequences that follow) is part of "normal" modern life? Of course not!!!

Our guest speaker Dr. Maria Moratto, founder of Prescription for Bliss, will show you various proven techniques for a stress-free life.

* NEW Service: DiSC Personality Profile *

Back in April when I gave the Teleclass Changing Lanes: the Secret of Successful Midlife Career Change, I mentioned some personality assessments that could help you determine your strenths, weaknesses, and the ideal careers for you. One of the assessments I included was DiSC Personality Profile. I am pleased to announce that I have added this powerful assessment to my service.

DiSC is the four quadrant behavioral model based on the work of William Moulton Marston Ph.D. (1893 - 1947) to examine the behavior of individuals in their environment or within a specific situation. Behavioral styles are grouped in four categories: Dominance, influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness. Organizations worldwide have embraced the language of DiSC, pioneered by Inscape Publishing over 30 years ago. Millions of people have gained insight about themselves and others through DiSC Personality Profile. It's a powerful assessment to help you figure out the right career choices, or improve interpersonal communication & relationships.

What's included:
  • Online DiSC Classic Profile 2.0 -- you take this assessment online, at your own convenience
  • Detailed report -- you will receive your report via email and print it out for your records (email me to request a sample report)
  • Debriefing Session -- 60-minute telephone debriefing session with me to go over your report
  • Your Investment: Regularly $197, Subscriber Special $97 (promotional price valid until 7-15-2007, subscribe to my monthly newsletter to receive your Subscriber Coupon Code)

2. Feature Article: Practice Detached Involvement

Parenting is one "risky business" with very unpredictable ROI. It could potentially leave you in tremendous emotional pain and/or financial ruin. I'm sure you have seen or known many great parents with terrible children (and vice versa). So, what's a parent to do? I learned this lesson back in my RN days when I was taking care of terminal cancer patients. This is a critical skill for all parents, as well as health care professionals, social workers, therapists, business owners, etc.Read the full article

Refuse to Choose - Success Strategies for Scanners
As I mentioned in my Simply Successful Secrets post, I can identify with the "scanner" that best-selling author Barbara Sher illustrated in her new book Refuse to Choose!: Use All of Your Interests, Passions, and Hobbies to Create the Life and Career of Your Dreams. I first heard of this book from another coach I was working with last year. She is a "scanner" and could see the same quality in me. After reading the book, I have to agree with her.

This afternoon, I sat in a Teleclass where Kim Fulcher interviewed Barbara Sher about this book. Many of the audience members commented that they could totally identify with what she wrote. I bet some of my readers can, too.

According to Barbara Sher, scanners are creative thinkers who have an insatiable desire to learn and explore new things. They are usually multi-talented quick learners who are drawn to many interests all at once and want to do everything they are interested in. They get bored easily by repetitive or routine activities. Many scanners appear unable to make up their minds about what they want in life, cannot get started, or cannot finish what they started. That's because the "rewards" they are after in each activity they pursue might be very different from most people can understand. Once they get the "reward" they want in a particular activity, they would lose interest and move on to the next new thing. Because they are drawn to so many things, and they don't want to just choose one thing, some of them end up not doing anything at all. It's like "I won't do anything, if I can't do everything". It's worth noting that although many scanners have ADD/ADHD (including Ms. Sher), it's not the same.

In the book, Ms. Sher identifies 9 types of scanners: Double Agent, Sybil, Plate Spinner, Serial Specialist, Serial Master, Jack-of-All-Trades, Wanderer, Sampler, and High-Speed Indecisive. Most scanners are a mix of two or more types. For example, I can see myself as a Serial Master in some areas, and a Sybil & a Sampler in other areas.

The exciting thing about this book is, Ms. Sher not only identifies the traits of each type of scanners, shares many stories of people she has worked with, but also offers many tools, strategies, Life Design Models and ideal careers for each type of scanners. Guess what careers she recommends for Serial Masters? Career/life coach, motivational speaker, talent agent, teacher, and athletic coach. Hey, I guess I'm on the right track! Coaching certainly allows me to combine many of my passions and interests, and offers enough challenges, variety, and learning opportunities to keep me interested. If you think you might be a scanner, I highly recommend that you check out this book. It's a fascinating read.

One of the success strategies Ms. Sher offers in the book is what she calls a Support Team, which is essentially a Mastermind Group. In her first workshop years ago, after teaching goal-setting techniques, and asking participants to map out their action steps, she set up Support Teams with groups of 6 people. These teams were supposed to set up nightly phone calls and weekly meetings with each other, so they can cheer each other on, keep each other on track until they reach their goals. She has found such teams extremely effective and successful. As she states, "Support combined with accountability creates a Real Deadline".

Isn't it so true that when we make a commitment to someone else, we are more likely to stick to our commitment? That's the power of accountability (which is a crucial component in the coaching process too). A Support Team (Mastermind Group) provides the structure, support and accountability that are so critical for scanners' success. In the Teleclass today, she mentioned the Support Team too, and said that some of the teams she set up lasted as long as 12 years. That's quite remarkable considering that most scanners can't stick to anything for long, which I think is evidence that mastermind groups obviously work very well for scanners (and anyone else, really).

So, what are you waiting for? Pick up a copy of Refuse to Choose!, hire a life coach (contact me for a complimentary coaching session), and join a mastermind group, if you have not done so. You can also check out BarbaraSher.com and GeniusPress.com for an online forum and more resources for scanners.

Let me know what you think. I'd love to hear from fellow scanners!

"Unleash the Full Potential of Your Performance Lifestyle" Teleclass recording is ready
We had an action-packed Teleclass last Friday with John Allen Mollenhauer, aka "JAM", founder of Performance Lifestyle Solutions and creator of Performance Lifestyle System, a 12-week intensive lifestyle training and coaching program.

Here is what we talked about during the class:

  • John Allen's inspiring personal journey from an over-weight, burned out entrepreneur, to a fit & healthy, high-energy powerhouse that he is today

  • how to choose the right diet or exercise program for you

  • what to do when you are too busy and too tired to exercise

  • how to renew your focus on health, vitality and high performance living with lifestyle strategies

  • how to avoid overwhelm, fatigue and overweight -- the stuff that keeps you stuck

  • how to keep your energy up while trying to lose weight

  • how to fight temptations while eating out

  • how to overcome emotional eating

  • can you really think yourself thin?

  • why setting the wrong kind of fitness goals would cause you to fail, and what's the right kind of goals you should set for yourself

  • how to lose the weight after menopause, childbirth, surgery, quitting smoking, thyroid issues, etc.

  • the paradigm shift you MUST make to create the lifestyle that help you stick to your fitness plan, lose weight, keep the weight off, and have the high energy to achieve your personal and professional goals

  • how to create the Performance Lifestyle mindset, and discover how only 3% of the population knows and lives!

To listen to the recording of this Teleclass and check out my Teleclass Archives, click here.

I love John Allen's Performance Lifestyle System. It's not a fad diet or quick fix, which only backfires in the long run. As we talked about in the Teleclass, it's crucial to have support and accountability when you are trying to lose weight and/or reach other health and fitness goals. Working with a life coach can certainly provide that kind of support and accountability, so does joining a mastermind group. John Allen's 12-week program combines the benefits & effectiveness of training, coaching and mastermind group, and gives you a step-by-step system to make fundamental changes in your lifestyle for overall, long-term health goals. I encourage you to check it out.

By the way, John Allen also offers a free e-book on his website called "The 7 Steps to Look, Feel, and Perform Better... in a Lifestyle that Works FOR You". Visit his website to download your own copy.

Simply Successful Secrets Final Roundup

Back in late March, I was invited to join a group writing project called "Simply Successful Secrets". This project was started by Aaron Potts at Today is That Day. Aaron's rule was for each participant to write a new post listing the top 5 to 10 things that you do almost every day that help you to be successful. They can be anything at all, but they have to be things that you do at least 4 or 5 times every week. You can read my Simply Successful Secrets here.

It's amazing how many bloggers participated in this projects, and the successful secrets they shared! Aaron started something wonderful and uplifting for all bloggers involved, and I think the ripple effect will continue to expand in the blogosphere for months or even years to come.

Aaron has posted a final roundup of all Simply Successful Secrets by categories, and a list of all 150+ bloggers participating in this writing project. Sorry it took me so long to realize this. I've been so busy with my business and other projects. Sorry Aaron! I guess it's better late than never, right?

So, hop over to Aaron's blog now to read the summary of Simply Successful Secrets, and check out what other bloggers wrote about their own successful secrets.

The Top 10 Creative Strategies for Moving into Action and for Getting Bottom Line Results
by Bea Fields

Your ability to move into action and to achieve bottom line results rests in the power of your thinking. These ten strategies will support you in transforming your desires into concrete action.

1. Expose your fears

Fear is a gift that was given to us at birth as a means of protection and to provide us with safety from harm. This innate fear often becomes distorted, and as adults, we begin to react with anxiety, sabotage, and self-defeating behaviors. Ask yourself this question: “What is my main fear? Is it fear of rejection, commitment, loss, change, or of growing up?” Once you have identified this fear, speak it out loud to one person and write it down on paper. Once you expose your fear, it is very possible to break through its control over your life.

2. Identify Your Beliefs

Our belief system is formulated in numerous ways through our environment, family, friends, society, religion, the media, politics, and cultural influences. Quite often, negative beliefs can cause us to act in ways that actually repel success. Do you believe that “Money is evil” or “To be successful, you have to work way too hard,” or “Girls should be seen and not heard?” If so, you may be pushing away the thing that you most want in life. By identifying your negative beliefs and replacing them with beliefs that empower you, you will begin moving in a direction of lifelong success.

3. Assess your communication style using the DISC

The DISC is a fantastic assessment tool which provides individuals with a nonjudgmental language for exploring behavior. One of the key foundations of personal and professional success lies in understanding yourself and realizing the impact that your behavior has on your life and the lives of others. This one instrument can help you be more productive, improve your communication with others, and ease conflict and frustration in all life areas.

* Hueina's note: I offer the DiSC personality assessment and private telephone coaching. Feel free to contact me for a complimentary consultation.

4. NOW! Discover Your Strengths

The strengths profile finder from the book NOW! Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D. is a revolutionary program which can show you how to discover and then develop your unique talents and gifts. One of the secrets to achieving big results and for feeling more fulfilled lies in exercising your strengths, not in dwelling on your weaknesses. This tool by Buckingham and Clifton can guide you to becoming a high performing and empowered individual.

5. Tap into your creativity

Many adults move through life thinking “I am not creative,” and wondering “What if?” As humans, we all have the ability to be wildly creative, and sometimes, this requires practice. Through the support of tools such as “Five Star Mind” by Tom Wujec, you can begin to unlock and expand the creative potential that lies deep within you. Using puzzles, mind-mapping, word association, and the power of curiosity, you can stimulate your intuition, innovation, and creative expression. As Napoleon Hill stated “All the ‘breaks’ you need in life wait within your imagination. Imagination is the workshop of your mind, capable of turning mind-energy into accomplishment and wealth.”

6. Focus!

A good idea can become a fantastic and profitable idea when it is given true focus. Your ability to concentrate begins with removing external (phone, interruptions, and noise,) and internal (fear, worry, and doubt) distractions. Creating a brain dump is a first step in the direction of focus. By purging all that is in your mind onto paper, you will create the room you need to begin focused thinking. From here, finding a time and place to focus and choosing one priority to concentrate on will make you more productive and will start your walk to greatness.

7. Join or Start a Mastermind Group

Did you know that Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone were all members of a Mastermind Group? This group of Leaders knew something many of us do not know. They knew that the key to their success was in their ability to rely on each other for feedback, ideas, accountability, and above all…support! These men controlled much of the industry of the United States during the height of their careers. Innovation and expansion in human thought often result from teams that mentally capitalize on the principle of collaborative thinking. With spontaneous expression and interchange of thoughts with folks who are up to big things in life, a mastermind group can shift your awareness, expand your thinking, and can take you to unprecedented levels of inspiration.

8. Be devoted to extreme self-care

You have heard it hundreds of times, but are you living it? Be devoted to a life of great sleep, daily exercise, a balanced diet, meditation, and luxuries such as massage. Begin today to formulate a plan for self care that will give you the energy to not only tackle life’s challenges but to one that will inspire you to greatness.

* Hueina's note: If you have not done so, visit my website now for your FREE Intensive Self-Care Kit.

9. Teach what you most want to achieve

Teaching is about sharing and using your own experiences in order that others may learn from your learning. The teaching process can also support you in developing yourself and is all about learning from other people. When we teach, we are developing, both personally and professionally, as we learn from our students, and most significantly, we are more likely to put our knowledge into action. By teaching what you most want to achieve, you will develop the knowledge and skills to take you where you most want to go in life.

10. Strive for mastery

Mastery is defined as a possession or display of great skill or technique. By going for mastery with your goal, you will be playing a much bigger game in life, calling you to set your sights much higher. When your goal is mastery, you will be devoted to finding better ways to deliver what you offer, you will be expanding your knowledge, and you will find yourself achieving much more than you ever thought was possible.

Unleash the Full Potential of Your Lifestyle FREE Teleclass
June Teleclass #2

Unleash the Full Potential of Your Lifestyle
-- to lose weight, look great,
and gain the energy you need to succeed!

FACT: Approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. (65% of all Americans) are over-weight and 60 million (30.5% of all Americans) are obese. In fact, obesity has become such a worrisome epidemic that puts millions of people worldwide at higher risks for major health problems such as heart disease, hypertension, type-2 diabetes, certain types of cancers, even premature deaths! According to the UK Department of Health website, obesity is responsible for more than 9,000 premature deaths per year in England.

Even if you are not severely over-weight, most people are constantly trying to lose weight for better health, for special occasions, or to feel good about themselves.

How about you? Did you make a New Year's Resolution to lose weight, exercise or get fit? This year is almost half-gone. Are you on target to achieve your goals?

(sign up now) ==> www.beyondhorizoncoaching.com/jam.html

If you are like most people, you have probably tried many different kinds of diet & exercise programs (unsuccessfully).

Do you have questions like:

  • How do I choose the "right" diet or exercise program for me?
  • How do I keep myself motivated and stick to my plan?
  • How do I lose the weight and keep it off?
  • What can I do when I'm too busy and too tired to exercise?!!!
  • How do I keep my energy up while trying to lose weight?
  • How do I fight the temptations while eating out?
  • Can you really "think yourself thin" like all these magazines said? HOW?
  • How do I lose the extra weight after childbirth (or surgery, or quitting smoking)?
  • I'm gaining a lot of weight after menopause. Am I doomed?

(sign up now) ==> www.beyondhorizoncoaching.com/jam.html

Are you tired of "hitting the wall" and "falling off the wagon", over and over again, and then beating yourself up & feeling bad about it? I could imagine just how frustrating and demoralizing that could be!!!

Weight loss is such an emotionally-charged issue. So many people use food to fill emotional voids, and then beat themselves up afterwards. So many people have attached their self-worth and self-esteem to their body weight. When they cannot stick to their diet or exercise programs, or when they cannot reach their weight loss goals, it's a huge blow to their self-esteem. Then they might resort to more emotional eating, and gain more weight, and it becomes a vicious cycle.

What about diet? It's one of those words that provokes very negative emotions in most people. Maybe you have been on a diet that leaves you cranky, drained, or craving for all the "bad" stuff. Or, perhaps you force yourself on a crash diet for a special occasion, and then as soon as you reach your goal, you "rebel" immediately and gain all the weight back.

It's obviously not working for you. What you really need is a long-term solution that will help you lose weight while keeping the energy you need for work and personal life, and help you stay healthy for the long run.

It's time to give up yo-yo dieting, and learn how to unleash the full potential of your lifestyle to lose weight, look great and gain the energy you need to succeed!

Please join me and John Allen Mollenhauer, aka "JAM", founder of Performance Lifestyle System, on June 15th, as he shares with you his personal advice on how to create a performance life style mindset and overcome fatigue & overwhelm.

Carnival of Healing #89: Journey to Wellness
Welcome to Carnival of Healing #89: Journey to Wellness. For those who are unfamiliar with this carnival, the Carnival of Healing is a weekly round-up of personal Web sites and blogs on the topics of holistic health, wellness, spirituality, and self empowerment. While you are nurturing others, don't forget to nourish your body and heal your soul.

This week I received many wonderful posts from our regular contributors, as well as from some new (to me) blogs. Many posts are about making changes, whether in physical health, life style, habits, mindset, or beliefs, in order to achieve total well-being. It takes courage and commitment to change, and sometimes it also requires letting go. I think many of us are on a journey to wellness, or helping others on such a journey, hence the title of this week's carnival.

I'm sorry about the delay -- I've been having some computer problems. Let's dive right in, shall we?

First off, just in time for Father's Day, our Carnival of Healing host Phylameana lila Desy is calling for submissions for Tribute to Nurturing Dads (I LOVE the title!) at her About.com: Holistic Healing site. "A call for submission of photos of fathers along with tribute statement from their sons, daughters, wives, or co-parents. Submissions will be included in a photo gallery dedicated to fathers. The gallery will be featured at About Holistic Healing on Father's Day".

      Health & Healing

Caroline Latham at SharpBrains presents Potential Nutritional Treatment for ADD/ADHD, saying "Our diet provides essential nutrients and cellular components to the body. It is an interesting area to consider for treating illnesses with fewer side effects." She cited an interesting study using a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as potential ADD/ADHD treatment.

If you have difficulty sleeping, check out I Can't Sleep! - 4 Common Causes of Insomnia presented by FitBuff.com's Total Mind and Body Fitness Blog. "At the root of all healing is sleep. Sleep is our body's chance to heal itself without us interfering at all. Almost everyone, including myself, has had or is having trouble sleeping. Remember what it felt like to wake up feeling completely refreshed and eager to start the day? This article will help you identify the four most common causes of your insomnia AND what you can do to start sleeping more peacefully TONIGHT!"

Also presented by FitBuff.com's Total Mind and Body Fitness Blog is How to Literally Turn Back Time - The REAL Fountain of Youth. This post shares a fascinating study of a group of 25 healthy seniors (average age 70), "with just six months of (resistance) training twice a week, these formerly average old-timers had reversed their muscle tissue's gene makeup to levels similar to that of young whipper-snappers, ages 20-35! Not only that, the workout program boosted their overall strength by an average of 50 percent!" Guess it's never too late to start working out!

Silicone Valley Blogger at The Digerati Life presents 12 Cheap Ways To Keep Fit And Stay Healthy. A lot of these tips are common sense, but worth reminding yourself of. The point is, prevention is the best medicine.

Vahid chaychi at Healthoma.com presents What boosts memory in children and adults. According to a study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, "it may be possible to boost memory with a plant compound called epicatechin. This chemical compound is found in several foods and drinks like tea, cocoa, blueberries and grapes. The Research suggests that epicatechin could help spatial memory, especially when combined with an exercise routine."

Debra Moorhead at Debra Moorhead.com presents Not Worth the Calories. Sounds like an interesting post, but, sorry I can't give you more details. For some reason I couldn't access this post. Every time I tried it crashed my web browser. I hope you have better luck. Sorry Debra.

Aparna at Beauty and Personality Grooming presents Home remedies for excessive thirst. Excessive thirst could be a sign of diabetes. If you are sure you don't have it, then try some of Aparna's home remedies to quench your insatiable thirst.

Gal Josefsberg at 60 in 3 presents 60 IN 3 Healthy Eating Habits. This post is the part 5 of her Healthy Eating Habits series. Gal offers some great insights & tips on how to break the binge and guilt cycle.

Ion Zwitter at Avant News presents Study Suggests Soul Sale Obesity Panacea. A fascinating study that suggests that our soul weighs about 15% of our body weight. The researchers of this study developed a weight loss program claiming "quick, painless removal of up to 15% of body weight at no cost." Interesting concept, although they didn't explain how it works.

      Life Lessons

Isabella Mori at Change Therapy presents Giving up, Efforts, and Trust. I love how she wrote it. Not giving up requires not just more efforts, it also requires imagination (what future might bring). She said that if you can't imagine what future might bring, then you need to have trust, which comes from wisdom you gain from past experiences. I also think that the level of trust (or faith) is reinforced by both positive and negative experiences, and how you have dealt with those experiences.

Virginia Simon at Centre for Emotional Well-Being shares her courageous journey of "dealing with PTSD and how I recovered from trauma and stress and survivor guilt and became 'normal'" in Lessons from Panic. What an inspirational story and attitude she has!

Rory Sullivan at hamelife asserted the importance of offering our children love, acceptance and a sense of security in Parents - Never Threaten Your Child With Abandonment. It's so true that we all need to feel loved and accepted, and rejection is one of human's greatest fears. Our children are even more sensitive to fear of abandonment and rejection. He pointed out a few common practices that parents use, and offered alternatives to better ensure a sense of security for children.

      Life Coaching & Personal Development

Laura Young at Dragon Slayer's Guide to Life defines the true meaning of "wellness" in Wellness Coaching: Defining Wellness. She offers the wellness concept from both medical perspective and holistic perspective, and emphasizes that even for people with chronic medical conditions, wellness and healing is always within your reach. In conclusion, Laura wrote, "Wellness is mind-body-spirit integration that promotes self-care and self-understanding and connects your life to the larger world. It is a state of being joyfully and enthusiastically engaged with your life, even when it doesn’t turn out exactly as you had planned." I couldn't agree more. So many people have become so attached to (and dis-powered by) their medical conditions. They have forgotten that they are more than their body and illness, and that their mind has amazing healing powers. Even how you describe your health condition (the words you use) has direct impact on your body. I've found that your body tends to "comply" with your thoughts & beliefs. I can personally attest to that.

Brandon Peele at Generative Transformation presents Origin of Endeavor. It all comes down to choices. Whether you are conscious about it or not, we are always making choices. Brandon cleverly explains the underlying factors dictating the kind of endeavors we choose.

Another post by Brandon Peele is Psychology vs. Philosophy, posted at Generative Transformation. It's a good read.

Angela Lindenmuth at Chiromom's Soap Box presents 5 techniques for a happier YOU!!! She wrote, "We all need to find our own way to go through the adventure of life. Try a positive outlook and watch the healing process unfold before your eyes."

Paula Gregorowicz at Coaching4Lesbians presents Words are just words. In a nutshell, "We all know harsh words spoken can and do hurt us, sometimes deeply. Yet, it is never the words themselves that hurt us — it is what we make them mean." How we interpret the words (or event) determines how we feel and respond to them. It's what I call "reframe" of perspective.
      Great post!

Tejvan Pettinger at Sri Chinmoy Inspiration shares some great tips in The Art of Happiness. The tips include minimize desires, avoid criticism, show appreciation, look after the body, be active.

Raymond David Salas at ZenChill.com presents How to Attract Your Desires Easily. In this post he introduces Al Diaz's book The Titus Concept, including daily exercises you can practice. In a nutshell, “The Titus Concept” is the idea that everything in your life, past, present, and future is there for your best and highest good. That’s right, EVERYTHING (no exceptions). I also recently came across Al Diaz's website and listened to his Teleclass. It's worth checking out!

The last post is Practice Detached Involvement, posted on my blog Intensive Care for the Nurturer's Soul. I think parenting (as well as nursing, medicine, coaching, etc) is "risky business" with very unpredictable ROI. Sometimes things just don't work out despite your best efforts. So, what can you do to save your sanity and inner peace? I learned this critical skill the hard way, back in my RN days...

      Practice Detached Involvement
© copyright 2007 Hueina Su, Beyond Horizon Coaching

A few months ago, when Prince Harry made front page news for making a scene at a party, I felt terrible for Princess Diana. Being a mother myself, I couldn't help but think how awful Princess Diana would've felt if she were still alive. She had sacrificed so much to give her sons a "normal" life, and I'm sure she had made her best efforts to raise them to be honorable, outstanding human beings. She probably would've felt disappointed and broken-hearted to see her son behave so badly in public. I know I would.

Now, Paris Hilton is in jail, and judging from the audience's reaction on Connon O'Brian's show last night, everyone was pleased to see that. I remember on the day she was sentenced to jail, a TV news reporter said he was sitting in the courtroom, and saw how stunned her parents were. I can only imagine how humiliating that must have been for her parents! To be honest, if I behaved like that when I was younger, my parents most likely would've disowned me.

I think parenting is one "risky business". It's one of those jobs that has very unpredictable ROI, and could potentially leave you in tremendous emotional pain and/or financial ruin. I'm sure you have seen or known many great parents with terrible children (and vice versa). So, what's a parent to do?

We love our children and wish nothing but the best for them. We try to be the best parents we could be, and try to teach our children to be a great person. We try to instill the moral and core values such as love, respect, integrity, honesty, courtesy, work ethic, compassion, etc. However, in order to keep your sanity and peace of mind, you have to understand and accept that no matter how much you love your children, your children are separate and independent human beings from you. Despite your best intention and parenting efforts, your children may or may not turn out the way you would like them to be. Your children have free will and their own mind. You cannot control anyone's thoughts, feelings and/or behaviors. All you can control is yourself.

That's why I recommend that you practice "detached involvement" when it comes to parenting. It does not mean that you withhold your love, affection, or parenting efforts for your children. It means that you do your best to love and raise your children, but, be detached from the outcome.

Let me give you an example of detached involvement. Years ago when I was a registered nurse, I took care of many terminal patients (cancers and other diseases). I lost both of my grandparents to cancers when I was in high school, so I always feel for cancer patients and their families. When you take care of a patient for a while and build a good relationship, it's heart-breaking to know that he/she is losing the battle and there's nothing you can do to change that outcome. For a while I used to go home physically and emotionally exhausted, and dreaded going to work because some of my patients might have passed away while I was not there. I knew it was not my fault or anyone's fault, but I couldn't help but feel depressed. Then, gradually, I came to acknowledge my own feelings, and accept that I simply could not control or change the fact that my patients were terminally ill. They were dying, and it has nothing to with my nursing skills or who I am. All I could do was give them the best care I could, and I had to let go of trying to control the outcome, if I were to have any peace of mind.

It took me a while to learn that lesson, and I'm so glad I did. The ability to practice detached involvement has helped me tremendously in my roles as counselor, certified life coach, business owner, and mother.

I think this skill is critical for all parents, as well as professionals such as teachers, therapists, health care providers, business owners. When you are in these roles, it's hard not to feel attached and responsible for the outcome (of your children, students, patients, or your business). When you have invested so much in a relationship/job, it's only human nature to feel sad and disappointed when things don't turn out the way you've hoped for. However, it is critical for your own well-being to understand what you can and cannot control, to let go the need to control the outcome, and to stop beating yourself up if things didn't work out despite your best efforts.

When you think about it, this principle applies to practically all relationships and projects. Whenever you go into a relationship or take on a project, you can have the best intention, make the best action plan and try to execute the plan to your best capacity. However, there's always something you cannot control, especially when there is another person involved. Sometimes there are things beyond anyone's control. As a result, things might not turn out according to your plan, despite your best efforts. After all, there are a lot of things beyond your control. As the Chinese proverb goes, "Man proposes but God disposes".

This is not an excuse to blame others for failed relationships and projects. You are 100% responsible for your own actions, feelings, the choices you make, and the consequences that come as a result. However, you are not responsible for someone else's thoughts, feelings, actions, and the choices they make.

Practicing detached involvement does not mean that you would withhold your efforts to avoid disappointment. As I wrote earlier, in the case of parenting, you would still try to love and educate your children as best as you could. That's every parent's responsibility. However, you have little control over how your children respond to your teaching, and how they choose to live their lives. Be aware of the "false responsibilities" you take on, and the underlying limiting beliefs or Gremlin Messages that make you take on such "false responsibilities" (read more about this in my previous post "Is your life haunted?")

My point is, if you have made your best efforts, and things didn't work out, there's no point in beating yourself up. It's important to acknowledge and validate your feelings (disappointment, anger, resentment, sadness, etc). Denying your own feelings will only make you feel worse. Instead, find a way to release these feelings, by writing in a journal, meditating, talking to friends, family, your life coach or therapist, etc. Accept that there's something beyond your control, make peace with the outcome, take the lesson learned, and move on.

      Action Challenge:

Next time you are embarking on a new project or relationship, take these steps to practice detached involvement:
      • State your intention -- What do you intend to experience in this process?
      • Create a vision -- What's your desired outcome?
      • Create an action plan to achieve your desired outcome
      • Identify and seek out support you need -- Who can help you achieve your desired outcome? What resources do you need? How do you get such support?
      • Identify what you can & cannot control in this relationship/project -- Awareness is the first step of making changes
      • Use daily affirmations to reinforce your intention and vision, and follow your action plan to work on what you can control -- make your best efforts
      • Use affirmations, meditation or prayers to release what you cannot control-- Make a conscious choice to let go your need to control the outcome. Ask your Higher Self, the Universe, or God, to take care of what you cannot control. Ask for guidance and inner peace
      • Make it your intention to make peace with whatever outcome you receive -- Have faith that everything happens for a reason, and there is a lesson or opportunity to grow in every situation. Look for blessings in disguise. Take the lesson, make peace, and move on
