Andy Rooney on Women Over 40
For all of us women over 40 or those of you looking forward to your 40's this is really good! If you missed it on 60 Minutes, this is what Andy Rooney thinks about women over 40. Andy Rooney is one smart gent, and I think this piece is very fitting for Valentine's Day. Enjoy!

by Andy Rooney, 60 Minutes Correspondent

As I grow in age, I value women over 40 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why:

A woman over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, "What are you thinking?" She doesn't care what you think.

If a woman over 40 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do, and it's usually more interesting.

Women over 40 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated.

Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 40.

Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 40 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over 40 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed, hot woman over 40, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress.

Ladies, I apologize. For all those men who say, "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?", here's an update for you.

Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage.

Why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage!

This handsome little bit of writing is incorrectly attributed to Andy Rooney. It was, in fact, written by Frank Keiser as part of a column on the Suddenly Senior website. Visit http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/rooney2.asp to see a discussion about the true author and Mr. Rooney's somewhat less-than-complimentary feelings about this essay.

Wholeheartedly I agree with this assessment of women over 40. However, I think this attitude towards men is quite degrading and inconsiderate. These words have only elevated the author of this (Not Andy Rooney) above the male species, or at least the author's primitive view of Man. This is a form of inflated arrogance, to degrade men in order to put one's self or others on a pedestal. It's a dangerous thing to do, to create a scapegoat, and to forward such a message to the rest of the world. This attitude continues to perpetuate the division between the sexes; it is an attack at the very core of humanity's souls.

Why can't women over forty be celebrated without degrading Man?

This attitude saddens me, saddens my soul.

Thank you, Anonymous & Mel, for pointing out that the real author of this essay was Frank Keiser, not Andy Rooney. I must say I was disappointed by Mr. Rooney's response to this essay.

"Why can't women over forty be celebrated without degrading Man?"

Mel, you've got a great point there. I agree that degrading the other sex or anyone shouldn't be encouraged, period. However, I think in this particular essay, the author wrote that last sentence as a humorous come-back to the ever-popular "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?", which obviously degrades women and was probably written by a man too. Other than that, this essay is an excellent depiction of women over 40.

    Congratulations on your new novel!!
