Hueina Su, a certified empowerment coach, keynote speaker, author and founder of Beyond Horizon Coaching of Denville, New Jersey, was the keynote speaker at the Northeast Regional Oncology Nursing Conference (NERON), held in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on November 9, 2008. The theme for the event was “Mapping the Journey: Navigating the Tides in Oncology.” The event was attended by over 180 oncology nurses, nursing directors as well as a few medical doctors, medical researchers, and pharmacists from all over New England.

Su started her first career as an RN, and has more than 20 years of experience in nursing, counseling, coaching and training. She is also an adjunct faculty at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (NH) and the County College of Morris (NJ) for nursing continuing education programs. Her keynote address, “Rx for Balance - A Prescription for Creating Balance and Harmony Amidst Chaos,” creatively meshed her experience in nursing with her passion for helping people reduce stress, create life balance and practice Intensive Self-Care. She presented her C.P.R. for Balance™ model (C = choose consciously, P = prioritize by core values, and R = reframe your perspective), which can help people live in the present moment, maintain balance in their lives, attain inner peace, and create a life of their choice.

Su graciously blends her Eastern philosophy and Western training in her presentation, which is filled with anecdotes, humor and practical strategies. With the recent chaos in financial crisis and the accompanying stress, Su’s keynote address was timely and well-received by the audience. Su comments that Self-Care Deficiency Syndrome is reaching epidemic proportion among the general public, particularly the Nurturers such as nurses, moms and family caregivers. She encourages everyone to practice Intensive Self-Care, and “put on your own oxygen mask FIRST.”

One of the strategies Su shared in her keynote was “Stop, Drop and Roll Out of Overwhelm.” This is one of the 7 keys she teaches in her new book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others. The book is set for release later this month. Best-selling author Terri Levine, Ph.D., MCC, calls it “A must read for anyone who is in the role of caregiver.”

Northeast Regional Oncology Nursing (NERON) Conference has been held biennially for the past 30 years by Dartmouth College – Hitchcock Medical Center. It’s the premiere conference for oncology nurses’ continuing education and professional development.
