1. Welcome & Announcements

Ah, Spring is finally here. Or is it really? Mother Nature seems to be changing her mind every couple of days -- at least it seems that way here in New Jersey. I hope you are doing well and enjoying the weather, wherever you are.

April proved to be a very busy month for me. I was invited to speak at the American Cancer Society Asian Initiatives New Jersey, Coalition on Family Caregiving (check out the resources for caregivers on their website), and Health & Wellness Fair (sponsored by Health & Wellness Professional Network). It was wonderful to meet cancer survivors, caregivers, as well as other caregiving professionals at these events. (A BIG welcome to new subscribers from these groups!!!) This week is National Volunteer Appreciation Week, so I was invited back for the Volunteer Appreciation Party at the American Cancer Society- Northwest NJ Region chapter this past weekend. What a wonderful group of volunteers and staff there! They are in great need for volunteers. If you live in New Jersey, please consider becoming a volunteer for this chapter, or find a chapter near your area.

At the American Cancer Society Asian Initiatives New Jersey, I talked to breast cancer survivors (and some husbands) about the importance of Intensive Self-Care and keeping life balance on the road of cancer recovery. I have to say, I was moved by the positive energy, support, love and hope I felt in the room. All the women there were so full of life. They were so different from the cancer patients I took care of many years ago, when I was a nurse. Back then, many patients' families chose not to tell the patients their diagnosis and prognosis. Many patients didn't realize their dire condition until the very end. They couldn't make the choice about their treatments or how they wanted to spend the last months or weeks of their lives. I saw many patients and families struggled and suffered, and they suffered alone. I am so glad that time has changed and nowadays people are so much more open-minded and positive about cancer, other illness and/or disabilities. Patients and caregivers alike have more resources, choices of treatments, and support from all kinds of organizations. Still, you need to be proactive and do the homework, and reach out to get the right kind of support you need.

Isn't that true for other situations and challenges in life? If you are facing some challenges, you need to take full responsibility for yourself, take an active role in decision-making and seeking the support you need. Asking for support is not a sign of weakness or inadequacy; rather, it's an act of self love. You don't have to go it alone, or suffer in silence. Reach out to someone who might be able to help you, or might know someone else who can help. If you are a caregiver, make sure you practice Intensive Self-Care so you won't burn out. Remember, you can't give what you don't have. Coaching and mastermind group are also very effective ways to get the support you need. There are other ways to prevent burnout, as listed in this month's featured article "Life Balance Lessons: 7 Keys to Avoid Burnout".

On May 12, 2007, I will present a workshop and also offer laser coaching sessions at the 17th Annual Morristown Women's Festival. This year's theme is "Claiming Our Birthright". There are more than 30 workshops, many vendors, and laser coaching sessions for all participants. If you live in NY/NJ area, make sure you come out for a full day of festivities celebrating women. To secure your spot in your favorite workshops, go to the Women's Festival website to purchase admission tickets now.

5. Resources for Your Balanced Life

In light of recent tragic event at Virginia Tech, I chose not to focus much attention on the news reports about the gunman and his mentality. Mother Theresa insisted on staying away from anti-war rally, saying it would only attract more wars. She said we should be "pro-peace" instead of "anti-war". The famous Chinese educator and philosopher Confucius said that in order to change the world, you need to begin by making yourself a better person. Therefore, I chose to focus my attention and intention on raising my own consciousness and the consciousness of people around me. There are some wonderful free Teleclass series out there that could help you raise your consciousness and create a better life.
